Default Need advice on buying IS300 (P0300 Code)

Hi all! New user here. So I am looking into an '03 Lexus IS300 with 130k miles for only $4000! The previous owner has recently got an oil change, had it smogged tested, and had a tune up, all with paperwork. Only part that worries me is that he says it has lost it's acceleration power recently, and that he pulled the P0300 code. I understand that this code means that there is a random misfire and that it is usually due to a faulty O2 sensor, leaky injector, or a faulty cat, etc. He said his mechanic has narrowed it down to the O2 sensor or the cat. My question is, is this a good deal or a moneypit i'll be jumping into? I am really trying to find a reliable car with not that much problems after some bad experiences with a VW GTI. Is this a car that's worth looking into or should I pass on it? Thank you in advanced.

The difference in cost between the two is quite a bit. You can buy an aftermarket sensor for 30-40 bucks and replace it yourself in 5 minutes. Depending on which cat may be messed up (our car has 3 I believe; 2 on the exhaust manifold and one after that), it can cost upwards of $1000. I see you're in California as well, and we have to get CARB compliant catalytic converters, which basically means they just cost even more money than a normal cost. Get a second opinion on the diagnostic, and at the very least take out the sensor to look at the tip of the sensor to see if it's discolored and worn. Hope this helps.
