they are the same / similar... you will have to examine the oil pump closely as there are differences between them due to having different crank sensors...
GTE blocks will work, but certain years have different motor mounting spots. I forget what the compatible years are, how much is the block? Cause you can just buy some GTE internals and replace the GE internals with them.

Good point and Id have to double check to be sure, but all newer blocks have both mounting locations...
I agree also it'd have to be pretty cheap to not just swap to GTE internals...
for $1200, you could buy forged pistons with rings and rods... couple hundred for machine work, done... so, spend a few hundred extra and get a bottom end that'll handle 1000 all day long reliably...
It all depends on if he is doing the work or not. If he isnt doing the work himself. I would say go with the gte block. Just thinking if he gets the gte rods and pistons. Then he has to take it to somebody to install and if his stock block is out of specs then he has to pay for machine work which could add up. I would just go with the gte block slap the ge head on and call it a day. Also are you planning on going boost? Either way you cant go wrong. just depends on your goals and wallet haha.

I can get a block hot tanked, milled and honed for $200... in spec or not...

^^Agreed. OP what are your goals for the new block or if you rebuilt your block? Do you plan on going boost or just freshening up the motor because of mileage?
Right now it's just for mileage but I'm getting a raise soon so I might boost it lol
But will see what happens I'm just trying to have a reliable car right now
