I found a 2003 IS with pretty much all the options in good shape (save 2 small interior peices) with 43k for 21,995.

I told the dealer i needed it to be 20,995 out the door with the following work:
4 new tires
Alignment
Maryland Inspection
Rear Diff Bushing Replacement (clunks shifting into third gear).

They threw in all the work & taxes for 21,995 but I walked. They called me today saying they would revisit the deal.

Wish me luck!

Also - do the rear diff bushings go bad frequently? Seems a bit strange that they get worn out after 40k. Also, is this covered under warranty?

Is is a certified used Lexus vehicle from a Lexus dealer?

Might consider a Carfax report to determine if there are previous insurance claims

Inspect for water or flood damage. This is a normal proceedure these days, since many autos need to be unloaded on to the public.

Seem like a lot of hill climbing or hard driving to wear the differential bushing. Was this one of the mounting rubber bushings or the pinion shaft bushing?

Is the transmission manual or automatic?

Are "all" the fluids fresh? This includes engine oil, transmission, differential, power steering, coolant and brake fluid...

It needed an allignment, was it a four wheel allignment?

What are the dates indicated on the DOT stamp on the tire side... Are the four tires about the same recent date?

And while your considering the purchase, what are the warranties included in the purchase price?
Aside from the "optional special extended" "we'll give you your money back if we feel like approving it "... type of warranty.
