I just got an 03 IS 300 5SPD .I hear a noise comming from the rear end when I shift from 1ST to 2ND . It is like a bumping noise .I have been told this is normal by some and a universal joint by others .Any help with this would be great. Thank you
Welcome to CL.
U-Joints are one possibilty. The IS300, having an independent rear-suspension and rear-drive, not only has U-joints on the driveshaft but also on the two rear axles out to the wheels.
Other possibilities are loose bushings on the rear suspension, loose shocks, or problems inside the differential. Sometimes, on a slick surface, you will get funny noises and sensations from a limited-slip differential ( if you have one) as it shifts the torque back and forth between the two rear wheels.

I took my car to the Lexus dealership and they said nothing was wrong with it.They said this was normal to hear this noise. Some how I just don't buy this .
The well described "thump" has been discussed in the my.is boards.
I heard that a transmission flush sometimes helps but it is a known "quirk" in our cars.
It used to bother me a bunch initially but now I don't notice it or don't hear it.
Hope it helped
