Hybrid battery

Mine never fully charges. At most 2 bars are empty. Is this normal? I read below on lexus parts site:

Your hybrid high voltage battery, or traction battery as it is sometimes called, may need replacement or reconditioning if you’ve noticed any of these symptoms in your 2019 Lexus ES 300h: lower than normal fuel economy, a charge that depletes overnight, or your hybrid battery fails to ever reach full charge

2019 es 300h.

Does your charge deplete overnight? My experience on the Highlander hybrid is the battery never shows a full charge it hovers somewhere in the middle.

Thx lex. Overnight is fine. Just bothered me a bit it never fully charges, and then I saw that snippet tonight.

I think, It is not good for the battery to fully charge and discharge; hence the computer maintnains the charge 20-80%.

I bought my first hybrid vehicle (a RAV4 hybrid, which has the same basic hybrid system as does the ES) about 11 months ago, and I've learned a lot about hybrids and their batteries since that time.

Most of the time, the hybrid battery shows between about a 40% to 80% charge level. It occasionally appears to be fully charged, but that is rare, and, when it is fully charged, that doesn't last long.

I've also noticed that, when the battery charge level drops to lower levels, it doesn't take more than a couple of miles of driving before it is back to near full charge levels. If the car isn't driven for a day or so, there is some loss of charge, but, again, the charge level rises to near full charge levels again after driving only a short distance.

I think the tell-tale sign would be economy. If the battery is having problems it's very likely you'll see a decrease in mileage. If it didn't charge "fully" (fully being a relative term to how much charge the computer will let the battery have based on the programming to preserve the overall life of the battery - it's definitely not 100%), then you'd likely see a decrease in economy since the car wouldn't be able to have as much of a buffer when storing electricity from stopping and slowing down.

Also, keep in mind that the battery indicator you see is not all bars = 100% and 1 bar = 0%. That meter indicates somewhere around 30ish% - 70ish%. The computer doesn't typically let it go above or below those values unless you're specifically doing a battery fitness test which requires something like the prius battery app and an OBD2 adapter or dealer specific instruments.

Good info on how Hybrids work.

Mine fully charges every day. I mean I see eight lines,
but that’s only when I drive downhill. On the same road I drove 2019 RAV4 hybrid 4x4 and I was not able to fully charge the battery.

Also, mine was in a container for three months and it didn’t deplete at all.

Today for the first time this year the temperature was above 80F, precisely 85F. Also, for the first time the ICE is not turning off, it is running all the time, the traction battery remains full. Normal or not?

Definitely not normal. Yesterday our temp was just barely in the 40s, and our ICE cycled on and off during light local driving. The only thing I can imagine that may influence this behavior is the drive select. Do you have it set to “sport” mode? It should still cycle some, especially when stopped at traffic lights. I would be planning a visit to the dealer.

ESh May 10, 2022 10:35 AM

I only drive in Eco mode.

I would like to hear about this from somebody that drives in FL, NV, CA…

Until now all was well with it.

I only driven mine in ECO mode as well. My ICE cycles on and off. I would think if there is anything wrong with your hybrid drive train then your dashboard all be lit with various lights.

ESh May 10, 2022 01:48 PM

I think this happened becase the battery got hot.

What was the A/C setting?

A/C and heater are themain factors for engine not turning off if battery is full and you are driving smoothly on a flat level.

Try turning HVAC off and see if the engine turns off after couple of minutes.
