Default Help. Replace hybrid fan or battery or both?

I have a 2007 GS450h with 136000 miles and got the check hybrid system light. I took it in and they said that the hybrid cooling fan wasn't functioning which was making the batteries overheat and not function. They reset the light and said that batteries should start working but would overheat again. They said the only fix was to replace the fan and the entire battery block (approx $5K). It seems like to me that if the batteries are still working it makes sense to just replace the fan, but they didn't think so. What should I do, anyone have the same issues? TIA

I saw one cheap on ebay for $85 used if you know how to change it yourself.
