P0A80 mystery

Working on gs 450h.battery modules 2 were replaced
Bus conectors cleaned up
Auxulary battery recharged and tested ok.

Now randomly code is poping out on random days and times.
Reader clean code and everything back to normal.
Is it possible that smart battery unit is faulted .
What should b code if faulty?

SILENTM 10-10-16 07:43 PM

What were the voltages of each cell, where their any that where border line that you didn't replace?

lexusisgs 10-11-16 12:52 AM

voltage on the sells were 7.65 v lowest to 7.77 v highest tested without a load .
now from Vehicle Diagnostic Report two cells were 13.5v and all others were 14.5-14.9 volts.
internal resistance was 0.019 ohm on each.

so block 10 was the lowest reading and cells were replaced in pair of 2.
It has 20 blocks with 40 cells. My problem is how to know which block is number 1? Is it one from left side or one from right side ????? 1_________10______40 or 40---------10----------1 ???????
The code was P0A80-123 . sub code 123 didnt hlp much.

P0A80 code pops up at different speed and time ,low speed (on battery) ,on highway at 100 km/h, on stand by waiting on red light etc etc.so really cant relate to same condition twice it is totally random.
what should b symptoms for faulty SMART BATTERY UNIT?

By the way storage voltage of the replacement cell was 7.45v and other one 7.5v at room temperature about 19 DEG celsius.

Procedure when code appears .
VSC and CHECK HYBRID BATTERY will be displayed
I clean code using OBD2 code reader .JUST ERASE CODE,
Petrol engine stops right away and hybrid kicks in.
Now i have to STOP car and turn OFF everything .waited few sec. and turn ON engine.
Now all good and runs great until code pops up again.

any idea why this is happening ....o yea model is 2008 gs 450h about 260 00

lexusisgs 10-11-16 01:06 AM

The replacement battery cells are from 2009 camry hybrid with low milage and it will fit lexus 450h GS.

lexusisgs 10-11-16 01:19 AM

The code P0A7F - Hybrid Battery Pack Deterioration
was code that showed after second time system failed.

The code was cleared and never showed up again only code p0A80 was showing every single time when fault happened.

Sorry ,I am just trying to recall memory during this period of diagnosing and driving gs450h.

just in case if that will hlp in order to find solution to this mistery problem p0A80

lexusisgs 10-13-16 01:55 AM

car was driven on expressway all day and code didnt popup.
after driving in city stop and go conditions code P0A80 poped up.
shortly after code was cleared and car was normal for the rest of night.
test for charge - disscharge was ok.
where can I find hybrid control unit .dealer will not sell it individually because they said it is part of the new battery pack.

Today was great day to do some writing after job was done.

code P0A80 showed up again.
went into garage to do work, I got 4 cells from toyota camry 2009/2010 at room temp. reading was 7.6v.
Well because it is hard to tell from witch side lexus considering module 10 (from left or from the right ) we decided to replace 2 blocks and that is 4 cells( one block has 2 cells)
Removed small buttery Panasonic, removed safety ORANGE switch ,two bolts on front left and front right side 3 bolts on the back, removed slowly all ducts and finally HYBRID BATTERY was out on working bench.
Problem one is that if you want to replace small cells you have to flip battery upside down to get access to the 10 mm bolts holding 40 packs .That was the pain because you have to remove all of it and that is time consuming.
We used regular voltmeter to check voltage on each cell without any load on them. Voltage was 7.9-8.1 volts. That will not give you accurate health of your battery pack ,because you need to get some kind of load to see if battery is draining fast and recovering fast. WE used simple 12v bulb from headlight and connect to battery cell while holding leads of voltmeter attached to positive and negative side.
READOUT was :
7,1 with load and recovery was 7.7 - 7.8 v .
one cell was going down to 6.4v and recovery was very slow (BAD cell),
be carefull when removing 2 black metal holders on top of cells .It has 4 bolts first unbolt side which is not connected with metal bracket ,if you do opposite was u will brake metal bracket what happened to us and you have to do some welding because that must be connected together. It has heat sensor on one side which is collecting info about temperature from battery cells and if it is broken will show misreading. After that is removed than you have to remove 10 mm bolts holding battery cells (each battery cell has one bolt ).MAKE SURE WHEN PUTTING THEM BACK TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE POLARITY )
it was VERY hard to jammed battery cells back .required very good push, that was two man job.We have replaced 4 packs in the middle with used ones from toyota camry .
After that was done trickle charger was used to bring voltage back on each cell about 8.0 v. just to be very similar . Charging was done with 2 amp. no more that couple min.

we put all together (no extra bolts or parts left over LOL) and that is how job is done without forking out 5,000.00 or 6,000.00 for the new from dealership.

SO FAR LOOKS GREAT ...........CHEERS

HINT
when selecting used battery cells check voltage first ,after that charge them with trickle charger 2 amp max. Record all readings of the voltage measured on them.
after couple days check voltage again on those cells at room temperature and if you see no difference or difference less than 0.3 V than looks like battery is good ,but remember that is just voltage and you need ampHours readout to get real picture about battery life (that means connecting battery to the load)

lexusisgs 10-21-16 07:33 AM

No more mystery about code p0a80.

problem solved

lexusisgs 10-21-16 07:38 AM

JUST ONE MORE WORD OF ADVISE
Prior to the removal on the buttom of the cells packs there are small plastics clips with temp.sensors ......make sure you attach same back to the new cell.

cheers

After replacing hybrid battery cells fuel milage was improved too.
about 620 km per one tank. impressive.

lexusisgs 10-21-16 06:52 PM

Even better after highway test was completed.https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.clu...00457c5f1e.jpg

just follow up on hybrid battery

impressive still works great
replace bad battery cells and save urself $$$$$

lexusisgs 12-01-16 10:47 AM

I am still driving with replaced battery cells.

OBSERVATION.
fuel economy still ok
-speed amazing
-charging cyclus very fast we are taking about minutes
-about 25-30 min. holding charge if car is sitting on parking lot .
-5-6 min. recovery recharge from one single purple bar to 4 blue bars.

great choice replacing only bad cells and save a lot of money .......Cheers!!!!!
