Is $3000 a good price for an extended warranty?
Hi Guys,
Just agreed on a purchase for a 2011 450h. Its in pretty mint shape with 33K km's on it (cost is $47K for those interested). I currently own a BMW which is why I'm buying the Lexus! Anyway based on my experience I am absolutely purchasing the extended warranty. Based on my mileage I am opting for the 60 month/160,000 km option. They said its typically $3600 but would give it to me for $3000 because I'm such a grinder (and nice guy of course!).
I was just wondering if this is a decent price or could I do better at another dealership? For that matter would I even be able to purchase an extended warranty at a different dealership?

If the $47K is for a Ultra Premium with that low of millage and extended warranty included, I think that's a decent deal. You may want to consider a flight out here, and getting is shipped back, you may still come out ahead.
The 450h do stick around the lot for a little while, however the ultra premiums last a VERY short time before they are picked up.
I scoped out another dealership much closer to me to inquire if I could get the extended warranty from them, and they told me I'd have to get the extended warranty from the same dealership where you're getting the 450h as they will register the warranty in the system at the time of purchase, and they wouldn't be able to do it after.

I picked up my '10 in December, at the time the dealer in Toronto offered me the same warranty for $2250. They dropped it several times because I kept saying no, not interested (I didn't buy so I guess that was their lowest offer). I think they started somewhere around $2900 which I thought they said was the list price, but I'm not sure, I might be wrong on that.
From what I understand, you are welcome to buy the extended warranty from any dealership at any time before the standard 80,000km / 48 month warranty expires, but typically they offer the best price at time of sale. I've never tested though, because I never buy extended warranties.
So I think $3K is on the high side, but I don't know if there are regional differences.

Interesting thanks for the info. I'm going to check my local dealers and see what they charge. What I found interesting is that Lexus (Jim Pattison) uses a third party company instead of Lexus themselves. The manager mentioned that 20 dealers in the west all use this same third party company which is based in Sherwood Park, Alberta. I found it quite surprising, but they said that it is the most comprehensive warranty on the market and includes the Navigation. Only thing you pay for is the diagnostic. Still need to do a little more digging...

Yea, an '11 with just 33K on it is still well within the standard warranty, no reason not to look at a Lexus warranty. Only reason to buy 3rd party is a) your standard warranty is already lapsed b) 3rd party is cheaper AND you trust them!!!.

I decided to stick with the third party. Spoke to a few other dealers and they all recommend the third party warranty as its more comprehensive. You guys are probably right about not needing the extended warranty but I've owned a BMW for the last 5yrs and I'm am not wasting money like that again. $3000 over 5yrs is inconsequential compared to what I've paid in the past. The 4 dealers I spoke with said that over 8-10yrs never had an issue with them not covering something (www.firstcanadian.ca).
