2013 Lexus GS 450h...29 city/34 highway=31 combined?

This is what the new reports are saying! If this is accurate this is simply a REMARKABLE achievement for Lexus, this segment and those that want to keep strong acceleration while getting fabulous MPG.

31 MPG Combined!! If this is indeed true that is pretty breathtaking. The 4 cylinder HS 250 makes 35 MPG! Tons of econo cars average around 31 MPG.

This could be a huge hit and another big step for luxury hybrids by Lexus again!:woot::woot:

Sadly no one cares, has anyone seen one in person or online? Sad :( Its great though they copied Lexus, we need more hybrids :D

Oops meant to say 27/32/29 for the M35h.:egads:

I think this is a great achievement for Lexus. A huge luxo sedan getting damn near as good mpgs as a subcompact econobox. Not only is it extremely fuel efficient but its faster than most cars on the road too. :D And the M35h is pretty s)hitty looking at Motortrends long term update.

Ive seen a few in person here in Socal. But yeah...the consensus is, M35h what?

very impressive. I wonder what they did to make such a huge jump. I think the 295 horses in the heavier RX450h fwd with combined 30 is equally impressive.

The switch from an Otto-cycle engine to an Atkinson-cycle one does the trick.:)

haha I guess. the old GS didnt have the exhaust gas recirculation did it?

More fuel, better combustion thanks to D-4S:

As with all Lexus hybrid vehicles, the new GS 450h is a full hybrid capable of operating in gas-only or electric-only modes, as well as a combination of both. Its Lexus Hybrid Drive system features an ultra-smooth running, next generation D-4S direct and port fuel injection system with an Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a compact, high-output, water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor powered by a high performance nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The two powerplants drive the rear wheels both independently and in tandem, as needed.

Improved fuel consumption is achieved through a high compression ratio of 13:1, a new mid-port intake tumble generator and the adoption of a Lexus four-stroke, direct injection technology, D-4S.

With one injector installed in the combustion chamber and a second mounted in the intake port, D-4S combines the strengths of both direct and port injection, realizing optimum engine efficiency throughout the power band and improving torque across the rev range, while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions.

The D-4S system features new slit-type injector nozzles with a modified port shape, a higher fuel pressure for more efficient combustion, and idle port injection for improved NVH characteristics.

Actually the original GS450h had D-4S too, so that's not what makes the new GS450h more efficient. It's the switch to Atkinson cycle.

Actuallly the 2013 (GWL10) makes 2 hp less combined gas/electric power that the outgoing GWS191. The 2GR in the new car makes 6 hp less...but the combination of the renewed gas, electric, hybrid battery and CVT's parameters play a big role in why the new GSh gets great mileage. The L110 CVT is actually the same exact CVT from the previous GS and the LS 600hL.

GWL10 - 2GR
286 hp @ 6,000 rpm
254 lb.-ft. @ 4,600 rpm

GWS191 - 2GR
292 hp @ 6,400 rpm
267 lb.-ft. @ 4,800 rpm

Not sure why you're responding to my point with a completely different point. You answered RXSF's question with the mere mention of the D-4S so I pointed out the fact that the original GS450h already had it. Atkinson-cycle engines are much more efficient but less powerful, and yes the tweaks in the hybrid system help too, so thanks for completing the answer.:)

Difficult to post from my iphone. Meant to post everything up at once but don't have the liberty of tabbing over and posting the info completely.
