90K service
 

My 2010 is due for a 90K service. Instead of going to a dealer who charges $700+ for oil change plus a few filters, I called a local reputable Lexus service shop. They recommended changing transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, water pump and drive belt for about the same amount of money. Even though those are not on the recommended list, but seem essential. Spark plugs were changed at 60K.

I like to hear what you think.

I think you live in a very expensive location. My Lexus dealer only charges ~$300 for the 30k service. Yeah that's still expensive compared to Toyota/Honda/Chevy, but free loaner car to use and free detail helps.

Brake fluid change is every few years, so maybe you need it anyway. Same with the engine coolant. I think I had those done at 60k and 120k? Don't quite recall. Transmission fluid is debatable - some say change it, but Lexus says it doesn't need it. Why change the water pump? That only makes sense if you're tearing the front apart anyway to change the timing belt, but our cars have a chain. I'd save the $$ and only replace the water pump if it ever starts leaking.

Changing the transmission fluid on this vehicle is easy and inexpensive as it is the same process as a manual transmission. It takes less than 30 minutes. They drain the fluid, then fill it with new fluid until it pours out of the fill hole and then replace the fill plug! Do it as it is very cheap insurance against transmission failure.

Look in your owners manual regarding when coolants ( we have 2 coolant systems - engine and hybrid system) should be changed. Make sure they only use Toyota Red Long Life Coolant. You do not need to replace a water pump that is still working just fine.

Brake fluid should be done every 3 years or so as it absorbs water which can lead to internal corrosion of very expensive brake system components (ABS & electronic brake force distributor)

Thank you both for your valuable opinions. I will save some $$ to pay for the high cost of living in the SF Bay Area. Just paid $3.40/gallon for regular gas.
