Default Chrome coming off grill surround 2010 HS

I have to say that I have really liked my 2010 HS in the two years that I’ve owned it, but I am concerned about this problem with the grill surround that I just noticed yesterday. The chrome is actually coming off of the sur

round, which is original to the car. Has anyone else had this problem?

It should be noted that we experienced some extremely cold temperatures here last week (-45 F), but the car was not washed, nor did it go from a heated garage to that cold.

Lexus is considering whether they'll help me at all with a replacement part. Stay tuned. Whether they do or not, they've been good to me in the past (this is our 5th Lexus). I think most companies would not even consider any assistance with a nine year old car with 138,000 miles.

Assuming the cold had anything to do with this, it would seem like a good thing to know for everyone on this site. Though I'll bet most of you are fortunate enough to live somewhere that it doesn't get this cold.

I've got a 2010 with 96K and live in eastern Virginia (not cold...especially this year) and haven't experienced anything like that. Good luck with Lexus. They've been pretty good to me too.

Wow, that is crazy and glad that Lexus is considering helping you out. Hopefully they warranty out the chrome surround.

I also have a 2010 HS 250h and love the car as well. I live in sunny southern California and we complain when it gets in the 40's...

My car came from that area. I bought it at LAX from a guy who lives in the south LA area. It was sold new in San Diego. If cars have personalities I'm sure it's wondering how it ended up in such a cold place.

UPDATE... Lexus continues to amaze me with their willingness to take care of owners- even if you buy their product used, and the car is 9 years old with 138,000 miles. After having the HS looked at at the local Toyota dealer (no Lexus dealer here) and determining that the grill trim had not been damaged, they have offered to pay half of the cost of the repair. I felt that was very generous given the age of my HS and the miles. I would not have been surprised if they said they couldn't help. I would have been mildly disappointed, but whining about it would not have been justified.

The Toyota body guy says the part is delaminating due to a rare factory defect that he has seen once before on a Toyota. It seems unlikely that anyone else will face this issue.

That is great that your Toyota dealer will pay for half the cost. Toyota/Lexus has very good customer service. I'm curious if Cadillac would do the same? Post pictures of the new chrome grill surround when you get a chance.

Will do.

And to be clear, the payment will come from Lexus. The Toyota dealer will do the work. I guess it takes about 20 minutes!

New grill is installed! I submitted the bill to Lexus as they said they would pay half. We’ll see!

It's strange. I have the same problem in my 4000 dollar refrigerator from GE Monogram on the shelf

True to their word, Lexus sent me a check that I received today for half of the cost of the repair, including labor. Exceptional customer care.

I see it everyday on all makes and models with my work. Obviously grilles are just cheap plastic chromed parts. The same from Kia to Lexus to Jaguar.
The plating begins to fail with time and bubble and flake off. Weather exposure and driving wear cause this failure.
It was very generous of Lexus to agree to pay anything on that.

I have the exact same thing happening. How much was the repair?
