Default Getting 26 MPG for my Lexus, is that MPG normal ?

Hi All,
I recently bought 2010 Lexus HS 250H Premium with 74k miles and I drove the car in Austin for daily commute to office.

I am getting 26 MPG, when I searched online I am shocked people are getting around 35 MPG. I am just wondering why my lexus giving less mileage ?

I use Regular Unleaded (typically 87 octane) Costco gas, not the premium one.

Is it normal to get 26 MPG or do I need to do something?

Welcome to the forum! I think that's a worst case scenario where I've got near that on the rare commute with extremely heavy traffic and A/C . But my worst tank has never dipped below 30-31 MPGs and best 35 MPGs. I use the "pulse and glide" technique to optimize my MPGs which worked in all the hybrids I've owned including the HS.

I took this picture about 2 years ago, and can't remember if I posted it here or not.

But the HS is capable of some fairly good mileage numbers. It depends on how you use the car. But 26 seems like something is wrong. Maybe you're in Power mode and not using the hybrid system?

Driving style can affect mpg a lot, especially a hybrid. I get 37-38 indicated (calculated I get ~1.5mpg less), combination highway, back roads and through town / college campus. 87 octane, tires ~35 psi. It's pretty hot here in NC but maybe not as hot as Texas. I don't do any hybrid-ish techniques other than lightly braking up to a stoplight to maximize regen and driving efficiently (which I try to do in any car), even if it's 80 mph. But whenever my wife drives it, the mpg plummets as she treats the gas and brakes as on/off switches! But I've never gotten less than 33, so something might be wrong with your car. Check all the usual suspects like tire pressure, air cleaner (I once found a mouse nest inside my air cleaner housing! That was in an 87 Integra a long time ago up in Rhode Island, totally unrelated to the mouse issue I just posted about in my HS. maybe mice just love me for some reason?). Next up maybe spark plugs and oil. Might be worth a thorough checkup by a mechanic, unless you know the history of the car.

mpg is subjective, all depends on the types of roads and the type of driver. FWIW my wife's 2007 Camry Hybrid averaged 38mpg over it's lifetime, and her new 2017 Camry Hybrid averaged 43mpg with its first tank of gas.

the HS is Corolla based isn't it? therefore smaller and lighter than the Camry, so I would think the MPG equal to or better than the Camry

I agree, you should have it mechanically checked out for any issues that may affect mileage. Be sure to check tire pressure and air filter. Also run a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner through the gas tank to clear out any fuel injector or intake valve deposits that may affect mileage. You can get it at Wal-Mart or any chain auto parts store. Also when was the oil changed last and was the correct oil used, Synthetic 0W-20.

Found this,

The HS is not Corolla based. It's slightly larger, but slightly smaller than the Camry. It basically based on a platform that wasn't imported to the US from Japan, the Toyota Sai.

The problems with the lower mileage in the HS, having a 2.4 liter, and Camry, having a 2.5 liter, is the poor, outdated engine software the HS has, and Toyota's failure in supporting the HS, or updating the ECU software.

In other words, the Camry will shut off more, and run on the traction battery more, and "act" like a hybrid more. If only Toyota would not have given up on the HS in the US........

Yeah, you're right. It is based on the Avensis platform and the Sai is the Japanese Toyota twin of the HS. I forgot about that.
