Default Oil Change 5k or 10k with Toyota Oil Change Service

Hi All,

I tried to search a thread for HS 250H but couldn't find related to our vehicle, may be it's discussed but in any case.

How often do you guys change oil? I have been changing every 5k from local Toyota Dealer (Not Lexus)

I was told by Toyota people that it's same car as Prius and they recommend Prius Owners 10k.

My oil warning indicator on my Lexus keeps coming ON afte 5k or so.

What do you guys do?

Thanks

They came out with a service bulletin back in 2010 that says 10,000 miles. The service light still comes on after 5000 however, and I think the owners manual says 5000 too. When I take my 2010 in for the 5000 mile services, it's basically just a tire rotation and check everything / top off fluids, wash/vacuum (for $80!). I had them change the oil too the first time, then I stopped. Now that I'm over 60K and it's no longer so new, I'm thinking of just doing the 10K service and having my tire shop do their free rotations.

I usually change the oil in my HS250H every 5k miles with Mobil 1 Synthetic and Mobil 1 filter. I later switched to Mobil 1 extended oil and filter and change the oil every 10k miles. I don't see any major difference in performance between 5k and 10 k interval. You can clear the oil change reminder by turn on the car to ACC while pressing the odometer reset on the dash. Make sure it is set to show current mile, not trip A or trip B.

I'm using Mobil1 plus the M1-103 Extendend range Mobil 1 filter. I'm almost at 10,000 with this oil and the only reason I think I'll change it now is because I have the 30,000 mile checkup coming due. I guess I'll just zero time everything at 30,000.

With the synthetic oil, I think I might take it to 12,000 miles the next time due to the fact it's a hybrid and the engine doesn't run all the time, and the longevity of the newer synthetic oils.

I've talked to people who go double that mileage. They just change the filter a couple of times and top of the oil.

This all depends on the type of driving you do. Lots of short trips without ever really heating up the engine, I would not recommend an extended change. But if drive it over a longer distance, then you can go 10,000 miles plus with synthetic. It all depends on your credit card.

Even on non hybrids, 5k mile oil changes is usually too soon. I plan to do 10-12k me oil changes with this car. 15k+ miles if I use Mobil 1 EP which is a much better oil than regular Mobil 1 which I confirmed with a few UOA's from blackstone with my previous car.

Thanks for the +ve feedback all, I got over 78k miles now on this baby, it's my drive around town car, any of you noticed any drop in MPGs when switched from 5k to 10k oil change?

I do find it a bit pricey for $120 oil change yet it only last 5k, on my BMW a $129 oil change last 15k miles.

Thanks all again

$120 for an oil change? Is there a spa in the waiting area complete with a full body massage as you wait for your car to be done?

Hahah no spa man, but there are free bagels (expensive bagel I had)
I have seen Toyota Dealership performs the same oil change for $45.

I am going to get it done at Toyota for $45 and only 10k miles, I just check after 5k miles, oil is still pretty new..

Now that I look....... you're right. Good catch.

That "service engine oil" reminder comes on every 5000 miles I think. Go figure. Just another way to get you into the dealer with your credit card.

Just to clarify an earlier comment, to clear the oil reminder (US cars) you first set the trip meter to "A" while the hybrid system is on, then turn the car off. Then press the trip meter reset button while turning the car back on, but not the hybrid system. For me, that's two pushes of the start button with foot off the brake. Wait for the odometer to read "000000" and your reset is complete. I got this out of the owner's manual page 426 (2010 US model), and it works.

That's the way to do it !!!

I also go into the maintenance reminders in the NAV, and reset them too so they come on red and remind me when to actually change the oil, instead of the oil reminder coming on every 5000 miles.

I starts to get confusing as to what I've done, when, and what needs to be done.
