Cannot stop raving about Overtrail sleeping platform
Hi! I just got back from my Labor Day trip and can’t stop raving about the modular sleeping platform I picked up from BamBeds.
My criteria were:
Nothing permanent – I’m leasing the SUV and will likely take it back to the dealership.
Easy to assemble and remove – I need my back seats in daily drive.
Installation on arrival – I haul a lot of camping gear and don’t want to stash it above or below the bed. To make that work, I simply drove with the boards leaned against my back seats—they took up no space at all.
I went with this platform, and it worked perfectly for me. Linky: BamBeds
Note: this setup is for the Overtrail trim. The platform’s front legs are designed to accommodate the “dip” in the floor by the back seats.
Solo assembly took just one minute - it was super quick and simple. No straps are required, but I experimented with them in case I ever want to drive with the platform installed while hauling my snowmobile. The built-in handle openings worked perfectly for this, as you can see in the last picture.
No affiliations. Before getting this platform, I used an old foldable mattress to level the floor with the back seats. Over time, the mattress compressed, so I had to add towels and other camping gear, which did not do my back any favors. I considered making a platform myself with foldable, lockable legs, but the project would have cost me about $150 in parts, two full days of work, and likely turned out poorly given my limited woodworking skills. I also would have had to make the front legs longer to account for the dip in the floor, which would have taken up even more space when transporting the platform.
This platform, on the other hand, is very well engineered and manufactured. It looks like the company uses some form of computer-guided laser cutting to make precise holes—everything lines up perfectly. It’s also designed to accommodate the dip in the floor next to the back seats. Instead of bulky legs, it disassembles into four pieces that are easy to transport and put together.
I first used it on my Burning Man / Labor Day extended trip, and my back can vouch for the results. Is it a bit expensive? Yes. Was it worth it for me? Absolutely yes.
