Lightbulb Phone/Tablet mounts

I thought I’d share what I pieced together for when I go explore in the mountains or desert. More details to follow, but what do you have in your GX for device mounts?

DIY iPad mount
YakAttack Gear Trac installed on dash to use with 67Designs mounts
Cup holder for handheld radio

iPhone can serve as an impromptu dash cam, "Hey Siri, launch Horizon."

Default Thought I'd share my phone mount solution

I've been racking my brain for a good Android Auto solution for my newly acquired 2017 GX

I don't feel 100% confident in the interface solutions (VLine Grom, etc) with the reviews I'm seeing so wanted to find a clean way to just use my phone.

I purchased the ProClip mount but didn't like how it blocked an air vent and required a power cable to obtrusively dangle in front of the screen and controls and drilling into the hard-to-find bezels was not something I wanted to do - so I came up with this.
  • 17mm ball mount using 3M adhesive mounted to dash bezel with 17mm to 17mm ball extension
    Link Link
  • A cradle from Amazon that uses Qi wireless charging and has an automatic clamping feature
    Link Link
  • Flat ribbon USB-C cable (with 90-degree connector) routed behind the trim pieces (currently routed to the factory USB power port in the center console - will probably hard wire into an accessory 12v line, eventually)
    Link Link
  • Eventually going to hardwire behind the dash using a hard-wire step down converter
    Link Link

*edit: Adding product links

Default DIY iPad Mount

Shopping list

Install hinges to cover with 3M mount strips

Add rubber bumpers

Install hinges to dash with 3M mount strips

iPad installed

Center dash console access (you can also see a third bumper I installed toward the top to eliminate some minor rattling at the hinge pins)

Default Gear Trac install

Shopping list, Amazon

Shopping list, Lowes

Pop off speaker grill

Use chisel to remove sections of ribbing for reinforcement plates

Super glue and drill and tap reinforcement plates

Ready to reinstall

There is a little flex in the system if the phone is hanging out in mid-air, but I adjusted the phone mount so that it is resting on the dash, and no more wiggling around.

I like that rail mount on the center speaker. I'm probably going to mount my ham radio face plate with that. Right now I just use a windshield suction cup mount.

Side note - can't believe they have that huge grill for that tiny speaker.

@Acrad35751
Yes, you are right. I am testing this for that purpose:

It is working on my desk and I am impressed with the image quality and low latency. I'm considering mounting it in the grill for blind crest help or on a tripod with a battery as a solo off-vehicle spotter. The app lets you choose mirrored image or not. It looks like I can have multiple, but with what I know so far, would have to change wifi connections to switch from camera to camera. That's the downfall of the cheap setup, but taking a little extra time at an obstacle is not a big deal to me.

Any plans to add crawl and/or MTS? I couldn't help noticing your center switches. :-)

I’d like to get CC working. Do you know if the on/off button is momentary or maintained?

Thanks xplorr, some people looking at this thread may be thinking “what about resale with that mod?” ...Well, I bought my truck for me to enjoy, NOT the next buyer and it may eventually go to the junkyard so mod on!!!

Parts can be replaced if needed

I will be replacing my other cars through the years but plan to keep this GX for at least 20 years assuming someone doesn’t plow into me and total it out. Not sure how much she will be worth in 2037 so I am in mod on mode :-)

Yes sir, bought my 2011 this spring with 144k on it. Not worried about resale.

Default 2010 GX 460 Cell Phone Mount

Was looking for a nice cell phone mount for my 2010 GX 460. Hoping to get one that looks as "factory" as possible . . . Maybe even have a custom one made. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 . . . ANY IDEAS?
