4-Low noise in newly acquired 460
Just bought a used 2015 460 with ~30K miles and, like an idiot, I forgot to test 4L during the test drive. Last night, on pavement, I switched to 4L and the transfer case made an awful loud grinding noise. It did switch over though and I was able to drive a bit. When I switched back it made the same noise. Anyone experience something like this? Is there some maintenance I can do to address, or is it likely that the transfer case is near shot? Since I was on pavement, I left the diff alone.

Were you at a complete stop and in neutral?
Mine will either make no noise or just a slight short engagement noise.
It may have never been engaged before. Your vehicle is still under the 6/70 powertrain warranty so if there is an issue Lexus will fix it for free.

I was at a stop and in neutral, but I only waited about a second to switch it over. I'm reading some 470 owners suggest waiting 3-4 seconds. To be safe I'm going to have the transfer case inspected. I needed to bring it in for a sun visor replacement anyway.

I always try to give mine 5 seconds to complete.

Ashamed to say I have never fully tested my GX. I did use 4low when we had a bad ice and snow storm here in Georgia years ago. I am afraid that I might be asking for trouble if I fully test this and I have no need so far. I am interested if it is in good working order but a bit freaked out to test it. I would have to search for off-road muddy terrain where I live to be comfortable with testing 4low and locked diff. Meh, street tires and wheels on my GX.....

There's no issue engaging 4lo on pavement with a GX460. You can do this and drive around in circles all you want, it's not going to do any damage. You should however only engage the center differential lock on a loose surface, be it in 4hi or 4lo.

Similar to engaging the transfer case, wait until the 4lo light stops flashing and goes out before putting the transmission back into gear.
