Am I being crazy for wanting to buy a new GX460?
we already have a fwd Highlander in our household for grocery shopping and kid’s school, and I drive a Subaru BRZ to work everyday. We do have the need for another family car/SUV. I always have a soft spot for legendary Toyota/Lexus true SUVs (4Runner, Landcruiser, FJ, etc). The GX460 strikes the sweet spot for both luxurious, light off road capability and the reliability comes from the legendary Toyota off-road nameplates. With the current incentive on the 2018 GX, I’m thinking of pulling the trigger. The negatives of this vehicle are: relatively weak powertrain but with poor gas mileage, outdated infotainment system, outward swung rear hatch. The plus’ are the aforementioned attributes and the excellent resale value I would expect in the long run like other Toyota off-road capable SUVs.
Is it smart to jump on the GX this late into its model cycle? Are there rumors Toyota is going to kill this model? Are there rumors for a new generation GX? Lastly, do you think if the GX can be a future collectors’ item like the FJ and old Landcruiser?

No, you're not crazy, it's a great vehicle, regardless of future models.
Yes, you're crazy if you think the GX is going to be some sort of valuable collectible car.
If you want a luxurious 4runner, the way Toyota and Lexus price these basically steers you into a GX purchase. Limited 4runner is not nearly as appealing.

I ALMOST did a LTD 4Runner before the GX. Interior was not nearly as luxurious and, although 'old tech', the GX has proven reliability. If you are going to flip the car in a few years then just get what you want. If you will keep it past say 6-7 years then the GX is the way to go. I am already doing double payments to get this thing paid off so I don't feel so bad if I lift it and take it off-roading and grab a few dings along the way. Or I will just buy a beater GX, do all the nice things and leave Jeeps in the dust/dirt. I wouldn't recommend a completely base model. You would be happier with the 4R. And considering 4R's come at a premium price point the GX will give you more of a luxury feel at the same cost. Best of luck to you, my friend.

LOL...the struggle is REAL people!
Like you, I also have a Highlander for family duty, which my wife drives daily. I have a 2015 GS350, which I absolutely love, but the lease will be ending soon so I am trying to figure out what to do. High on the list of potential replacements is a GX. I had a 2007 4Runner V8 that I really loved. Having two 3 row vehicles in our house makes no sense at all, but still...

why buy new? get used one in good condition with low miles, and save money. It still looks exactly the same

I was thinking about that too. Although they all look the same outside after MY2014, what features has GX added over the years from 2014 to now? I do see there are a lot of 2015 certified preowned models up for sale, I think that’s because the of the 3 year lease returns.

I understand your pain about prices and quick sells as I'm in San Diego. I ended up expanding my search nationwide and picked up a non-CPO 2015 premium in claret mica (red) with ecru interior still under factory warranty with only 40k miles for $34k. I had to fly halfway across the country for it, but if you can find the right car, the midwest has great pricing compared to the west coast.
