Preparing for a 6000 mile road trip. What should I check on my GX?
#16
Hey CanadaGX, been following your post here, was there anything that was suggested by the other members, that you did or did not do, and anything that you wish you had?
I'm also looking at taking some long road trips and would also like to be prepared.
Thanks for all the post and congratulations on what sounds like a great trip!

If I was going to do it again I would remove my roof rack cross bars and leave them at home. There were two hotel parkaids that I couldn't get into as the truck was about an inch to high. Removing the cross bars may have helped the mileage a bit (even if slight). I spend alot of time tracking milage, and tried all sorts of things to see the impact. I found no difference in performance or milage with premium vs regular. Milage was pretty much only related to speed and wind on the highway.
The GX is a great platform for long trips. I am certain you will enjoy.

Texas Road Trip
CanadaGX, I did enjoy a little trip over the weekend. Not as many miles, about 1,000 round trip. Drove from San Antonio TX, to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Car camped for a couple nights and hiked the tallest peak in Texas, 8751 feet. Don't laugh, it's all they've got here....lol
As for the GX460, you are right on point, great vehicle for long road trips, only 2,000 rmps at 80 mph, cruise control did a great job on the hills especially when set at 80. I also, by mistake filled the tank with 87 instead of the usual 93 and didn't notice any difference either. This will not be a regular occurrence, but was a nice to know.

I've made a 3 week, 6600-mile road trip from NY to LA for $3600 total. This was with 2008 gas prices (~$4.20). You may be able to cut down your budget a bit. You should consider stealth camping. In my experience, you will cut your trip cost by more than half, meet more interesting people and see more interesting places. It takes a certain attitude and an appetite for the unexpected, but it holds huge potential rewards. For me, hotels are universally disappointing—either gross or too fancy. After the trip, I took some train tickets on https://www.dbauskunft.com/de/ and went on vacation cause I needed a much deserved relaxation
