Default My fiancee drove my GX 500 miles with the differentials locked

She borrowed my GX for a trip from Phoenix to northern AZ and back. She somehow hit the differential lock button and ended up driving around for two days in-town and driving all the way back to Phoenix (highway) with the diff locked. She said "some lights were on on the dash and it was driving funny when I turned."

I tested the diff lock in a parking lot and had trouble getting it to disengage, and when it did there was a slight clunk. How much is this gonna cost me?

More than likely accelerated wear on some of the u-joints, axles, front and rear differential, center diff, bearings and drive shafts

It sounds like your center diff is damaged from symptoms. Not sure how serviceable that center diff is. You could always try the used parts route as well.

New parts cost on center diff is around $2700

I would run some additional tests before all hope is out the window.

find a gravel/dirt parking lot and turn it on again, drive around for a little bit and then try to disengage. It isn’t always an automatic/immediate disengage and there sometimes can be a “clunk” indicating it is released. I am old school in my 4x4 practices that I still feel the need to back up about 20 feet to to ensure everything has released - that may help.

if you still have trouble after that you may have a problem.

The other side to this is that highway driving may not damage the center diff, turning is where it suffers - not knowing when she engaged it the number of miles driven on it may be negligible.

Keep us us posted on what you find out and good luck.

You might see if it will go in and out of 4LO as well.

caeosos is right... the clunks aren't necessarily abnormal. I haven't recently paid attention for my diff lock but 4LO on mine will make a small click noise.

Yeah, i wouldn't assume there is a serious problem until it proves out.

BTW, there is an AZ GX group on Facebook if you are interested. Mainly 470s but there is at least 1 other 460. Small group so far but it is a spin off of the national GXOR group for those in AZ. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1728...f=group_header

Always loved those people who just: "Hey, that thingy was blinking and buzzing, I saw steam coming from under the hood but why did my engine blow up"?

At this point you have not much to lose, I would drive the truck until it runs and when something breaks just get it fixed.

Tell your GF that next time if any yellow or red lights up pull over immediately and find out if it is safe to continue driving.

Last time my tire pressure warning light came on and I pulled over to check the tires right away. It turned out to be the spare.
