Engine Air Filter fitment 17801-38051 vs 143-3025

Anyone removed carbon filter in the air intake box
Anyone removed the carbon filter inside air intake box? I just removed mine. I also cut the intake scoop inside the fender that is connected to the airbox, basically an air flow accelerator. Ptr03-35090 ac.
FYI, the gx stock intake airbox is the same as the 4Runners airbox.

Do you feel any difference with it removed? Better airflow? I replaced the filter without the pre-filter foam pad. The GX airbox is pretty restrictive with all the filters.

I did the deck plate mod on previous 4Runners to get in more air which helped throttle response.
you have pics?

The upper part of the intake air filter housing has another filter. Is that what we are talking about? LOL.
I've read that some removed this extra filter for better throttle response too.

that's the filter the OP is talking about. Of course removing the filter will allow for less restriction but the carbon filter is there as an emissions control device. not sure how strict your emissions inspections are but removing it would cause you to fail a visual inspection if found.

The local smog check stations never open the airbox to check for the carbon filter if they don't see anything funny. Since this mod still uses the stock air box, I don't think they will open to look at the top. I am also keeping the stock paper filter. You can run a TRD drop in filter from 2010-now 4runner for even more air.
I can't say for sure the car is faster, but this mod is free, basically a TRD cold air intake for free. Be sure to disconnect the battery to protect the MAF and to reset the engine computer.

Does the TRD filter make whistling noise on the GX? A coworker put a K&N filter in his 2016 Tundra and he said it makes whistling noise when he accelerates.
I also read some post about the TRD makes the same noise on other Toyota but not particularly on the GX.

I have been using the K&N filter for about 50k miles and never noticed a wistiling.

Up here in WA state our emissions checks will be completely phased out by 2020... currently anything 2009 and newer doesn't need to be tested.

I was reading a study and they determined that it was costing a certain state (I think it was PA) like $250k to "catch" each car that had failed emissions by making every single car go through the testing program and have all those state workers, equipment, testing facilities, pensions, etc.
Lots of states are phasing them out and for good reason. That money would be better spent elsewhere, like say new buses. Hell, for that much money you could just buy the people new cars.
I'll be glad when my state finally gets rid of it, they've phased large parts of it out already. It's not like the old days where every car had a carburetor and out of tune cars were making a mess of air quality.

Engine Air Filter fitment 17801-38051 vs 143-3025
There are two different engine air filter that will fit the GX. One is and the other is 17801-38051. Both are from Denso and both are claimed to be OEM. I know 38051 is the original comes with the GX but what is 3025? Anyone know what's the difference and which one would be better?

I replaced the one with foam pad with one that doesn’t have it. I asked the seller and he said the one without is the newer one. They both work the same. Since then, I replaced it with AFe dry filter.

Buy one of each and see what the difference is? The Denso one may be missing the foam pad as was suggested, or they might be exactly the same. You could wash and reuse your existing foam pad if you like.
"Better" is a sliding scale between allowing air to flow, and filtration of dust and particulates. But if Denso makes OEM, then I suspect they are nearly identical for the drop in filter.
