Here’s a pic of with and without the foam. Both are Toyota OEM made by Denso.

Yea, I have used both and didn't notice any difference myself. Just curious if there is any difference on performance and filtration.

Mine had one with the foam on it... I replaced with a non-foam unit.

Generally a simple procedure to swap air filter but not everyone is a DIYer but this may give some confidence to do themselves who don't normally perform maintenance on their vehicle.

Default Air filter

Wanted to ask why the air filter the GX was originally delivered with is different than the one we put in. The original one seems to have an extra layer but not sure if it serves any purpose.

Just bought OEM filter and it came with extra layer as original. Yes I am curious too. I didn’t see any other filter like this.

Yeah noticed the same when replacing mine. The extra layer probably there to help make it a little quieter but not sure. The Toyota OEM I got doesn’t have it. Since then I replaced it with a dry filter and keep the original as spare when I wash the permanent filter.

You can order the one with the extra filter if you want. sometimes the extra part is able to stop large things from going through a worn or wet area of the filter paper section.
some other versions use a metal screen. which you should get depends on your driving environment and maintenance schedule.

It looks like a foam pre-filter. It will prolong your filter especially in very dusty areas. I have seen these pre-filters on snorkels and HP intakes. It is just a guess by the way

Default Engine Air Filter - Two Choices

Does anyone know what the differences are between the two engine air filter choices available from Lexus?

Looks like the same parts for 2016 and 2019 MY

1780138051

and

17801YZZ13

I was sold the latter at my local dealer, but didn't know two choices were available.

Thank you!

Looks like 1780138051 is OEM Lexus air filter and the other is for 4runner a d FJ but can be interchangable between the two.

I have 1780138051 in my 17

Here’s the difference, the Japanese version has the coarse foam ‘pre-filter’, the USA made version does not.

The WIX I ordered had the "Pre" filter. Thought it was a nice touch.

Weird thing is the 4.6L in the Tundra...takes a different filter.??
