How many think that the GX will be discontinued with the longer version of the RX coming to the market?
Can lexus of focus on a 3rd Gen GX or is its' focus elsewhere?

Why discontinue when you can leverage a platform that already exists in the toyota line-up.

RX is not an off-road vehicle. GX and LX will remain in this class. It is just a matter of tech and engine for Lexus in the off-roading future designs.

I guess I don’t know if this spending all the time and money on R&D of 3gen is within their strategy in this crossover crazy world.

The GX will still exist as the Prado in other countries. Whenever they redesign that thing, all they need to do is slap on a more luxurious interior and whatever engine/transmission is needed. Looking at the LX, it sells somewhere around 5-6k units a yr and it still exists. Goes to show the profit margin on these things.

I imagine there is a lot of profit for Lexus/Toyota in the GX these days.

You need to be looking at the global sales figures. The figure you quoted is for US alone. Lexus sells more LX in Russia and probably way more in UAE.

My point was, even if it is low volume in the US, they should still continue it, using the LX as an example here. The profit margins should be pretty damn good to keep the LX around at such low volumes.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and more profitable to have 2 versions of the LX (for the next gen LX of course)?

They do. A 2 row and 3 row option.

They already have less equipment LX -- it's called a Land Cruiser and in other markets it can be had pretty much bare bone. And with 4.6L V8 too. Evidently Toyota does not believe that lesser trim Land Cruisers will do well in US market.

It was not clear from your post whether you meant continuing to have LX in the US market or continue to have LX at all. Also margins on the LX don't have to be that high. Most of the R&D is amortized on a high volume Land Cruisers so there isn't much to do for the LX except put fancy interior in. Everything else has already been developed, designed and tested for the LC.

I think the GX serves that purpose just fine. Imagine the 4.6L in a 3 ton+ vehicle? I can't imagine people will be willing to pay $70k+ for prius like acceleration
