what is the proper step to put the GX into L4 mode? What exactly is L4 mode?

As with my previous truck I always put the transmission in N, step on brakes and push the little switch down and pull it toward the back. Don't forget to lock the differential too.
Use 4LO to help get you out of deep mud, snow, sand, steep hills or when you need more traction than 4HI can provide.

Just remember that gear teeth have to mesh. Therefore give it a second without stress on the gears to complete that function. Nuetral unloads the gears so it can shift. Read the manual, there is some great stuff in there about operating your vehicle.
