It's basically the remote lock/unlock distance. That's the major difference with Enform option which you don't have the physical distance limitation of the key fob operation range as long as the vehicle under cellular signal coverage. I never used remote start in real life as I don't have too many situation the car was outdoor for long time.

15-20 feet though should be fine for my use. Vehicle is usually that close to cabin. I'd love to have the Enform option but OEM non-starter with my model year. Probably some 3rd party options though.

I think Lexus only made Enform remote start option available to GX after 2015 model year (if I am correct).

Aside from climbing under my dash to look for this module, is there an easier way to see/discover if our 2012 GX460 already has the remote start module on board?

just try to start the car remotely. press the lock button two times and then press it a third time and hold it down for 3 seconds. the lights should flash each time you press it but then will blink and start the car after the 3rd time.

well...... no luck. Looks like I don’t have remote start. I tried the procedure three times and nothing happened.

Thanks for the directions!

If I am not mistaken, starting 2015 (or 2016) model year, Lexus has changed GX remote start as Enform subscription based instead of hardware module based as before.

If you're registered on the Lexus owner website, you can email them with your VIN and ask for a build sheet of your GX. It will list all the options that came with the truck new. It's nice to have.

If you dont have enform and want to use the remote start via an app/phone you can use the "RES+" module. The install is a bit more difficult and i think requires a minimal yearly subscription but its much better than the cost of enform and completely eliminates the FOB distance factor.

Unfortunately i dont think anyone has found a way to bypass the shutoff besides going aftermarket. The factory remote start is heavily integrated into the vehicles ECM so its probably not going to be as easy as cutting a wire or removing a fuse.

Factory unit almost looks trivially easy to install. Just the harness into ECU and then another into main BUS connection and then another connector that is only used during installation and then disconnected.

I probably won't get to this install until early May though. If I do find distance limiting I might play with ways to make it greater.
