to do it or not do it, its like an insurance policy. some people have it and have that piece of mind while others don't and just deal with whatever happens when it happens if it happens.
as for fluid if you do decide to do it yourself, I personally was on the fence between WS and Amsoil ATL since I run Amsoil on my other vehicles. After looking up the cost of getting it done at the dealer, i've decided to let them just do it when the time comes.
Using your phone for the 120 or so degree temp check point will be a lot easier than even having TS hooked up and/or the method you can make the drive indicator flash when it hits 120.
Hey everybody, acquired my first Lexus last month and have been reading the forums before and after my purchase.
I bought a high mileage, but well taken care of 2012 gx. 154,000 miles.
It ran ok, but I’ve put about $1,200 into 8 new spark plugs, a fuel system cleaning and a transmission fluid change.
The transmission fluid change made the biggest improvement in smoothness. My Lexus dealer service department said it’s pretty much a 100,000 mile fluid and mine had never been changed. They said it was getting nasty. I mentioned my hesitation in getting the service because of the sealed transmission. They unequivocally said it will benefit the vehicle. I know, money for them, right.
For those who are convinced it’s not necessary, I probably won’t change your mind, but for those not sure, I can tell you it absolutely made transmission shifts smoother and the ride enjoyment that much better.

Thanks, It’s in good shape for sure. I paid $17,800 for it. The kbb was 20k even with the mileage but it had been on the lot for a while.

How much fluid did they bill? Are you sure it was a complete flush or just a partial fluid change? I don't think the dealer will do a complete flush rather they just drain and replace the fluid which may be only a fraction of the total. If that's the case you might want to repeat this service another 1-2 times, few ks driving between, especially if the old fluid was nasty.
When our '15 gets there in age or milage i will absolutely do drain-fills on the transmission, the sealed for life is only good for the warranty period. If you want to keep the truck running beyond that you have to maintain the transmission.
MB backtracked on its sealed for life transmissions in the late 2000's recommending trans service every 40k.
Welcome aboard, great pick up! Should serve you well for years to come. Our 2012 is about to hit 112k... need to get the tranny fluild and the brake fluid done. On yours, you should consider the front and rear diff as well as the transfer case if they have never been done. Does that method require the transmission to reach operating temperature first?
Important part with operating temperature is making sure proper fill level with the overfill open. I've seen the precision on this all over the place to no one checking to getting it down to the droplet every 15 seconds it seemed. I frankly don't know for sure if one needs that level of precision. I'd have a hard time believing that an extra tablespoon of fluid was going to be the difference between a proper fluid change and future problems. Just my opinion though on the latter.
I'm gonna venture into doing some drain and fills.
Buying a case of fluid
I'm somewhat averse about mixing fluids so just gonna use stock Toyota WS fluid. I realize it may not be the best but new fluid is better than nothing.
