Default Hitch-mounted Storage

Hi y'all, im looking to get more storage room for long road trips with more than 4 passengers. does anyone have any experience, opinions, and/or recommendations? I've been looking at the thule, rola, and stowaway... and leaning towards the stowaway. Are there any other brands i should be looking at? A swinging arm would be nice to enable access to the back door with the storage box in place. Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Not exactly what you're looking for but I have a cheap slide in rack from Harbor Freight. Used it for hauling firewood when going camping or for a bbq grill behind the rv. You could load up those Rubbemaid containers and ratchet strap them to the rack. Much cheaper but it really depends how often you would use it.

I love my 4x6' Cargo trailer. Long or short trips I just hook it up and go. Easy to hitch and unhitch. I considered the stowaway at first till it was going to end up costing almost as much as the trailer and still not have enough storage room. Now we can pack anything we need with room to spare. It is small and fits in the garage. I find it so much easier to use than our old cargo carrier and no more forgetting it is up there. :$ FYI Cargo carriers and parking garages don't work well...just sayin...

It depends on if you want something you tow or you just want a cargo tray you can pack on. We use a cargo tray when we make longer trips with our 3 kids. We pack 4 of those boxes you see on the tray and we just keep it in the garage when not using it. There is enough room at the back to open the trunk (not fully though).

Kitana and Newb2Lexus, could you post a link to the specific trailer/tray models you have? I've been using a Thule force large roof box over the last few years during longer road trips but am considering the possibility of adding a trailer or tray. I'm interested in what you guys currently have and would like to know the costs as well for comparison. thanks

Ours is several years old and I ordered it on etrailer.

Ours does not seem to be available anymore (or at least I don't see it). The first time we made a trip and I had to pack strollers and the red wagon to the roof using a step ladder was when I decided to buy a hitch tray. I think it is 40''x60'' and happy with it ever since.

Mine is a standard V-Nosed Carry-On Cargo trailer 4'x6' that I purchased this summer in Harrisburg PA for $1,295.00.
