The "9700" is considered the GX base model. You can add packages like the Premium package to it. However unlike the 2010-2013 GX460 models every feature on the 2014 is pretty much a la-carte. "9710" is the luxury GX model. They changed the name from premium to luxury to alleviate confusion between premium package and premium GX. When the first 14 GXs came to our store, the sales managers were all confused which model was what. Then day following Lexus renamed the 9710 as the Luxury and making it very clear.

2010-2013 GX460 came pretty loaded, if you got the "9710" premium GX you got Mark Levinson, Air suspension, liquid graphite wheels, Xenon lights with AFS, and the ability to add rear ent.

So pricing and options were much easier to calculate for those model years. Now everything is stripped in order to bring down manufacture costs to help give Lexus Financial the ability to offer lease rates of $499 a month for a "basic GX".

I do have to mention, I am very disappointed with the new GX. The quality of materials is terrible. Real leather looks like aligator skin and the NuLux pleather looks better than the genuine leather because its smooth and non-textured. The other day our store got a base GX. I took it for a spin and noticed so many features missing! You basically have to get a "9710" luxury to get the features a 2010-2013 had in its basic form. OH! and get this. while the 2014 has a lower starting MSRP, the 9710 model is actually more expensive then the outgoing 2010-2013 9710 model.

What is interesting is that Lexus has facelifted this model for 2014, yet they plan on killing the GX line in 2015 to introduce a new model-line that is unibody with a third row seat. Basically a longer and fatter RX which they will call the TX.

I was looking to replace my 04 GX470 with a 2014 GX, but now im more than likely going to look at something else.

All I have read is they will phase out the GX model year 15/16, they say LATE 2016 about their new Crossover or whatever it may be, so Im guessing we will see the all new in 2017.

from the looks of the current concept crossover, underimpressed with their xover so far..
toyota, lexus imho has never been good with making stylish sporty xovers.
they will now be competing with every other CUV out there and it may hurt them in the long run.

One possible outcome is they will stop selling GX in the US (such a shame IMHO) but keep selling it in other parts of the world. TX would basically be a luxury version of Toyota Highlander so to speak. People who buy Prado over a Highlander would of course prefer GX over TX for similar reasons.

P.S. It would be interesting to see if TX will retain off-road tech such as 4LO, Torsen, locking diff and full-time 4WD.
