Infotainment Upgrade Options
Hi ClubLexus,
I am new here so please be kind.
I recently purchased a 2006 Lexus GX470 and I am looking at upgrade options for the infotainment system. I believe the two options are the following.
1. GROM Vline 2
2. Tesla Style Head Unit (Phoenix Automotive)
I was hoping to get feedback from GX owners who have upgraded their infotainment system to see which route I should go.
Please let me know if there are other options as well that people have experience with.
Regards,
Cheemz

Ive been thinking about GROM a lot lately but, remember that it will still look stock once said and done. Whereas the Tesla style will give it a refreshed look going forward. all in all, it's about what you perceive as a step in the right direction with regards to the interior of the 470.
Now, with that being said I still have the oem ML Nav unit in mine, but I will in the future go for the Tesla unit.
PS: By the way, welcome and congratulations on your '06 GX

Hi Rygar470,
Thanks for responding. I agree the Tesla style unit does look a lot newer. I'm hoping for some feedback from other GX owners who have had experience with those units. My understanding is the GROM vline has been used by many GX owners and is recommended as an upgrade by GXOR group on their wiki.
Also, thanks. It feels nice to have a GX!

The VLine2 units look and work better on newer gen nav systems. With mine being a '04 with the oldest gen nav available in the GX's, I've pretty well ruled it out for myself.
The Tesla style units look amazing, but don't seem to be a plug and play, everything works all the time solution, and they aren't cheap. I'm hoping by the time I'm ready to worry about this they will be all sorted out and it will be a viable option for me.
There's also the beatsonic kit that allows you to retain your factory nav and HVAC controls, but replace the tape deck with a single DIN aftermarket head unit...this option has really got my attention but it requires the factory CD changer be present, and I tossed mine when I installed a GROM USB2 w/ BT years ago (which is clunky and never really worked properly for me).
Or you could convert to non-nav and run any single or double DIN head units, but it's likely more expensive than the Beatsonic kit when the dust settles, depends on how much you can buy the used conversion parts for.

Hi IanB2,
Thanks for the info. Based on the results so far I think I'm leaning towards the Tesla Style head unit. I do think it has a newer look to it.
Also I see you have a 04 GX, 93 LC and 15 4R. Is there any vehicle you like more than the other / pros and cons in your opinion? Or is that too long of a question?
Thanks for your response. I appreciate it.

My Land Cruiser is my favorite, hands down. The solid front axle makes it feel like a truck (very rugged, goes anywhere), the turbo diesel noises are great, it turns heads like few other things on the road, it makes even mundane trips put a smile on my face. Just oozing with character compared to the others. The GX is the most bland of the 3, but the build quality is nicer than the 5th gen (thin metal panels, lack of sound deadening, etc), and I prefer the V8 to the V6 despite being down on power on paper, the GX is nearly invisible to "car people"
while out and about. All 3 are excellent vehicles, and there's a reason I've built up my fleet this way.

I went with the GROM V2. I read too many horror stories about phoenix automotive and not getting support. So far I'm happy. It's no perfect but it gives me bluetooth and Carplay which is all I need. Oh and if I want I can watch ESPN or Netflix.
