Need Wheel/Rim and Tire size advice GX470

I am a New Member to the forum but not a new user. I have a 2006 GX470 we bought in 2007. I have been searching the forum via Google for advice on repairs for years. Thank you everyone for all the help. I finally joined yesterday because I have been reading the forum about tire and rim size for weeks but can't do as good of a search with google (or ask questions) as I can on the forum search. If this is like coming to all the fraternity parties but not joining the Frat please forgive me. I'm in now!

Here is where I need advice. The truck has gone from my wife's daily driver to my daughters college car to now MY hunting truck. I have had Michelin Road tire on it since I've owned it. I'm ready to make a change. While it has never gotten stuck, and I have tried hard the last few years, It's time to stop pushing my luck. I'm ready to make a change.

I bought a new set of rims so I can put my road tires/rims back on in the off season. I bought a set of Toyota OEM TRD Pro SEMA Black 17X8 Aluminum Wheel/Rims because I liked the way my son's looked on his 4runner. So these are .5 inches wider that the original rims17X7.5. I got a 0 offset so the outside edge will sit about .75-1.0 inch further out than the current rim ( part from Offset, part from extra 1/2 width of Rim). How is Thinking and math so far. The current tires are 265/65/17. Most A/T come in 265/70 or 265/75/17. I'm Ok with that size. But there is a lot of room under the fender well on the GX. Do I go a little wider since I have a little more rim to a 275 or 285/70 or 75. I want to advise all changes of rub and don't want to have to do any modifications under the fender well.

What has been your experience and please feel free to direct me to a different thread if I missed one. I will post pictures along the way.

Thank for your help. Sorry for the long first post.

PS I will NOT be lifting the truck at anytime in the future so working with current equipment.

I have 1" spacers on the stock wheels, and run 265/70/17 Michelin Defender M/S on stock suspension. It looks great (a big difference IMO, because of the way the factory setup tucks the tires inside the wheel arches) and isn't very close to rubbing under any condition I've encountered. You can do a comparison to the resulting dimensions that you'll have with your various options.

Thanks I6turbo. Your 1 inch space should be close to my 0 offset. I got my tire mounted today. I hope to have them installed on my truck this weekend. Finished product photos then.

Thanks, I'm hoping to get them installed in the morning. Photos then.

The truck looks great. So what was your final tire size?
Are you also running 1”spacers?
i just picked up a set of GX460 18” wheels (6 spoke wheels) and I’m planing on all terrain tires as well.
Trying to decide on what size but I’ll get some spaces to improve the look.

Thank you. I am very please with the outcome. Actually put it in the mud today infront of Hurricane Florence. I finished with 265/70/17. I did not use spacers. The Wheels had a zero offset which accomplished giving the extra inch width. Original wheels I believe were either 20 or 25mm offset, thus the extra approx inch from the new wheels.

That turned out really nice!

BobDigital 09-14-18 08:23 AM

Yeah they look awesome!
I got go figure out the offset in my GX460 wheels. I’m not sure if it’s different than the offset on the stock GX470 wheels to determine if I want spacers.
I’ll likely go with 265/65r 18 in the ko2 or durratrac

Hey MTD...those look great. Just wanted to confirm that you have no rubbing with that setup? No trimming, no heat gun on stock vehicle?
thanks in advance.

MTD1 12-05-18 06:24 PM

No trimming, no heat gun and no rubbing. It really is an amazing offload vehicle.

Nice! Black on the white is a great look.

FWIW, my TRD Pro wheels are 17x7 w/ +4mm offset.

Here's what 275/70s look like with no lift. I had to push the front fender well forward about 2" to clear them. Other than that, no modifications required.
