Default GX 470 vs GX 460 (power topic)

Hi everyone,

I have a 2010 GX 460 (301HP) with 120 000 miles and my wife has a 2004 GX 470 (235HP) with 230 000 miles and a new timing belt. Both cars are running well, very good condition. My concern is the power, not the figures but the real power when you push the throttle, the GX 470 is much more powerful than the 460. With the 470, the car seems so light and if you consider also the loud V8 engine sound, you can really feel the 235HP. I live in Africa so I go offroad as well, in sand dunes most of the time, the 470 is the best car ever in this type of track. On the other hand, the 460 is a great to drive, I mean if you want to drive smoothly, the V8 sounds like a quiet V6 and shifting gear is very smooth. Problem is the power, you don't feel the 301HP, the car seems very heavy and you have to go up in the RPM to get the power, you don't have the ON/OFF sensation that you can feel with the 470. I think Lexus did that to allow the car to be more fuel economic. I would like to have your opinion on that, have you ever heard this "problem" before?

Other thing: when i drive offroad in sand, wheels are spinning, both cars made some beep beep and the automatic traction control brakes the wheels, not so much but enough to slow down your momentum, is there any way to disconnect that? On the 460, there is a "tract off" button but even when it's activated, it doen't change anything. The only way I found is to drive in 4Lo but I usually drive in 4Hi so useless for me.

Cheers!

Both vehicles have about the same amount of torque (329 ft-lbs/445 Nm) which is what gets the vehicle started moving. Horsepower only makes a difference once the RPMs get higher, like on the highway or race track.

The difference is that the 460 weighs a lot more than the 470. 5199 lbs vs 4871 lbs (2358 kg vs 2209). So it's like having two extra people along all the time.
The cost of all the extra safety and features...

I'm not sure you want to disconnect the tracRion control bci think it actually helps you get unstuck? But if you can't find it here look over at t4r.or and they have info on that.

Thank you for your feedback! Right, torque is very important, even more than HP. It's clear for me now.

They are related. HP is just torque x RPM divided by a constant.

HP is the rate of which torque is applied. So for racing, you want more torque at higher RPM to accelerate faster.

Say you keep the trucks at 4,000 RPM or less (typical street driving), the 470 will be faster since it is lighter and has the same torque (and thus HP).

My 335is makes 370 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 RPM, the M3 V8 makes only 290. So if both cars were limited to 4,000 mine would be much faster. But that car revs to 8,000 RPM and so generates much more HP than my car (7,000 rev limit). Thats why its faster in a race.
