Oxygen Sensor - Most update to date info for GX470
I think we need a definitive thread for the oxygen senors. There is lots of conflicting info on this board which sent me in wrong directions. Lets try and use this thread for the most accurate guide.
I’ll start with:
Bank 1 Sensor 1 = Upstream, Driver Side, viewable and accessabile from the front driver side, mid upper wheel well. Before the catalytic converter.
The Original part number is Toyota 89465-60150 Denso 1240. Please note the Denso number on the original sensor is in italics and NOT the corresponding Denso part number.
I replaced with Denso oxygen sensor 234-4138.
The error code was P0031 on a bosch code reading unit.
I did have to use an oxygen senor wrench/socket that is rentable from an auto parts store.
To begin. Position your car with the front wheels on the other side of a gully or higher relief to give you more room to crawl under the front axel area. Turn steering wheel all the way to the right to give you more access through the wheel well area. You will see the sensor hanging down in the wheel well to the mid upper right of the front axel area. Put on a long sleeve shirt and use the socket tool to loosen the old sensor. You may have to let it soak in a nut freeing agent like wd-40 or the blaster stuff. Once the seal is broken it unscrews easy with your fingers. The new Denso sensor includes a copper thread seal.
The hardest part, for me at least, is getting the other end out. You have to crawl underneath and hit the clip just right with the tab holding it in. Putting the new one is a breeze. Disconnect the battery to reset the codes. Drive around for a while.
Easier would be to jack the front end a bit.
Easy fix.

This is great info. I just replace all four of my oxygen sensors. I kept getting the check engine light. I started with changing the gas cap but that didn’t fix it. I was really worried I would have to replace the catalytic converters (that’s what the Lexus dealer told the previous owner). Fortunately after replacing all four sensors it hadn’t come back on. It cost me about $210 on amazon for all four Denso sensors. Like you said the hardest part was the clips holding the electrical connectors.

I own a 2008 GX 470 with 152K miles. I've had the check engine come on before but the gas cap has always resolved it (on my 3rd or 4th gas cap). Any reason to proactively replace the oxygen sensors if there is currently no check engine light on?

You might find your gas mileage increase with new sensors....they do have and end life even before total failure i.e engine check life.

Just throwing this out there. I was getting all the codes and figured at 186k or wherever I'm at, I should probably replace all the sensors. Took one look at the upstream ones and realized there was no way I was getting my hands up there. Posting on here, found out I would likely have to take the exhaust system off. Instead, I spent 20 bucks on some O2 sensor spacers on the downstream sensors and codes went away. Been fine for several thousand miles and passed smog with no issues.

tz693, thanks. I got this exact tool from Amazon and I got both of the downstream sensors changed with it. That was fairly easy. I looked at the upstream sensors through the wheel well. Looks like a very tight squeeze - doesn't look easy - and if the sensors are screwed on anywhere as tightly as the downstream ones were, I don't think I'll have the leverage to get them off.
Edit: I just saw your post. Looks like it's fairly easy on the 2004 model. Mine's a 2007 and the upstream sensors are not that accessible.

I made a thread about this previously when I was attempting to get to the upstream sensors. 2005 and up are very difficult to get to. I abandoned my attempt to replace them and went with the quick fix mentioned above.

Thanks for your tip! I have already replaced the downstream sensors. If I get error codes again, I'll probably try the sensor spacers...

My 2007 GX470 , Bank 1 sensor 1 light came on Nov 2021. I usually do ALL my own auto repair. Upon barely being able to see it and couldn't even touch it under the exhaust manifold I took it to a local repair shop, Hawkers in Fort Collins, Co. They're very honest and fair.
I had already bought the sensor on Amazon for $43, it was a DENSO unit. This shop is 1 off few who will install your part just slightly bumping their labor rate.
They quoted $350-$450 to install. They called me 3 hrs later after install. The VSC chk eng lights still came on. It was the WRONG one I bought on AMAZON
though it clearly stated it was for my 2007 GX470! THAT WAS WRONG.
The one Amazon sold fit a 2003 -2004 GX470. The garage told me the O2 sensor I gave them from Amazon was Denso no. 234-4138
but correct one was 234-9051 for the 2005-2009 GX470!! After replacing with the correct one (they supplied this time ) total cost was $698. Oh well,
I've saved 10s of thousands of dollars over last 55 years and multiple vehicles. BEWARE of Amazon when ordering. ROCK auto is an excellent reference.

I just ordered two Denso upstreams from Jeg's. At 257kmi I think it's time to replace the OEM sensors.
BTW, Jeg's is great, they do price matching.

P0031 and P0051
CEL light on.....
Checked the codes and 31 and 51 are on, although only 1 (can't recall which one of those 2) were on first, I cleared it and light came back on after a short drive.
Is it possible both 02's went bad at the same time?
