Cold Air with Heat on

I get that it's an older model and eventually parts wear out, but the heat still works fine in AUTO when temps are low. It's only when it's between 40-60 that it starts acting up. I'm thinking it's a thermostat issue - assuming exterior - but don't know enough about those parts.

Dont Think that would affect temo, , just airflow, I’ve seen some pretty clogged up filters on my kids cars and HVAC worked fine..
I replaced both the cabin and engine air filters last summer so not likely the issue, and agree dirty filters wouldn't affect the temp anyway, just airflow - which seems to be working fine

I didn’t mean that’s the parts are old. The technology for climate control may be old, my wife’s new ford escape does a better job of maintaining a constant cabin temp when set to auto than the GX.
