That's the fan clutch. It's either stuck engaged, or it's really hot out and trying to cool the truck. Mine pretty much runs constantly during Arizona summers.

yep, it seems to be 'stuck'. it revs with the engine together. that started in the winter
what is the fix? going to mechanic so I have an idea....

the fix is replacing the fan clutch. It's supposed to rev with the engine when it's engaged, that's how it works. The faster the motor rev's, the faster it spins the cooling fan to draw air through the radiator to cool. It's an easy and relatively cheap repair, all things considered.

While they're there, have them look at the condition of the radiator. You didn't say how old your GX is, but a lot of the 2004-2005's are getting to the age where they go bad.
The mechanic may have to remove it anyway to get clearance to replace the fan clutch...

it doesn't need to be removed, but that's a good suggestion.

If I can add my two cents into this.. Yes the fan clutch has seized. No its not a hard fix, but make sure to not cheap out on a replacement fan clutch. I made the mistake on my 2004 GX to buy a "premium" best of the best clutch from Autozone and it was a disaster. It would take longer to warm the fluid in the clutch keeping it running on a 1:1 with the engine rpm, and then finally go away. It would as the engine compartment got hot go back to a 1:1 given the fact it was a nice cool fall day. And it became highly annoying; especially on freeway on ramps, or green lights. Sounded like I was driving a jet. Ended up buying a second one (this time from Lexus parts dept.) that was OEM denso branded, and no problems. Therefore save yourself the return visit to your mechanic and buy it from the dealer.
