We got a very very old lexus, now what
Hi everyone. I guess this is the right forum for this. We just purchased our first ever lexus. A GX 470 with 150K+ miles. The car has always been serviced at Lexus Authorized dealer (even in recent times)., Oil change was done at dealer recently. However I don't think they did a power steering oil flush and a transmission ATF flush.
I am also hearing some noises from the suspension(front, while braking). I figure its the ball joint. Or maybe the pad on its way out.
Would love to get some tips on how to start maintaining this beauty. Going to lexus dealer for everything is going to be very very expensive, so in Santa Clara what is the next best option? Local Toyota dealer. Some good independent workshop. I am new to California(and USA), so have no idea about this place.
So appreciate if you guys guide me and tell me about some good workshop in my area, and what all things I should start working on to have a long trouble free ownership.

You can get routine service done at a Toyota dealer - the 4.7 liter engine was used in several models (Tundra, Sequoia, etc) so filters, etc will be there.
Anything requiring parts replacement will likely need to be done at a Lexus dealer. Or a Toyota specialist independent shop.
For the front noise when braking - after a normal drive, feel the temperatures of the front wheels. They should be warmer than the rears, but equally warm left & right. If one is hotter than the other, that's a good sign you've got a caliper problem (common on the GX). If you can't touch them at all, then both wheels are affected. A worn ball joint is also a possibility - the next time you get an oil change, ask them to check for worn suspension components (vehicle needs to be off the ground for this).
A power steering fluid change (drain + fill, never flush) can be done at 150k miles. I think you don't need to use the Toyota brand fluid (it uses ATF, if I recall correctly). Ask your service guy.
A transmission fluid change can also be done (absolutely never flush) at this time. You can either do a drain + fill which will get about 1/4 to 1/3 of the fluid out, or you can drop the pan and change the internal filter (100% fluid change). The latter is far more expensive but will ensure a longer life. Use only Toyota brand fluid.
Brake fluid should be changed every 3 years. 2 years if you live near the ocean. Use any good-quality DOT3 fluid.
Coolant should be changed every 3 years. If you haven't had the radiator swapped yet, it's about the time they start to go. Use only Toyota brand coolant.
Oil changes - Go by the severe service schedule if you primarily do city driving. Any good quality oil that meets the specs can be used.

Chip made some very good points.
Also, a very good place for lots of info is the GX offroad facebook page. Just search for GXOR in your facebook search.
Lots of very knowledgeable people on there including former and current Lexus Techs.
