Gx470 valve adjustment
 

Greetings feller gearheads. I performed the 120k mile service this weekend, and noticed the maintenance checklist states to have valve clearance checked at this mileage. The truck runs great and engine purrs. Anyone had this done this before?

I have not done it on this car but i have for the 2jz-ge vvti which is a dual overhead cam setup with a bucket like lifter. Unless you notice a huge performance loss, or it feels just not like it used to i would avoid it all together. is a great informative video on the basics of clearance and the adjustments as far as concept goes. I also found a link on the manual change for the 2UZ-FE. The quality of the parts just don't break down at all, and they really don't get out of wack either. Unless your are changing cam's or doing something nutty like that then pass. Also they can't really adjust them only shim them, you will see what i mean after you see that video and look at that service page. ^ Thanks for your response and feedback. My engine is running very well and has no odd noises. I think I'll leave it alone.

Anyone else? I'm guessing most folks either don't know about this or have chosen to ignore this dealer gimmickry.

I've never even seen this discussed on the GX470 forums, but it's a common practice with a lot of import engines.

I had it a mechanic do this on a 4 cylinder Honda and it sounded more solid at higher revs with what felt like little more power.

never done it on a Toyota, the shimming part just made me not want to mess with it, if you didn't drive it hard all this time probably won't make a difference. Remove cams? no thanks

My 1st gen CR-V needed it every 3 oil changes or so - this was the B20Z motor, and because it spun "backwards" compared with other Honda motors, the valve adjustments would get tighter with age. So a quiet engine was a bad sign. ;) If you let it go too long, it would burn the exhaust valve and maybe the head.

I haven't seen anything in the maintenance guides regarding valve clearance adjustment on the 2UZFE motor. but the 4Runner guys have their guide (referenced above). Looks expensive - I would schedule it with the timing belt as you're taking a lot of the same parts off for access.

Back in the day, I owned several Hondas that would require periodic ( ~15k mi) valve adjustments to quiet down the racketeering esp on the 1.5, 1.6, and 1.8 engines of the 80s and early 90s. Didn't think adjustments are still needed this day and age with hydraulic valve adj.

You guys can't compare it to Honda's in concept yes same thing there is a cam and valve etc. But on a honda it has a rocker and an adjustable screw and makes a huge difference and those do get out of wack over time. They way this is done, the only time it would be needed is if you change the cam!
