At last, 6x9 8 Ohm speakers that work great and are cheap
Like most of the GX470 owners, both of the 6x9 front door speakers speakers were distorting the sound of the ML system due to theit membranes being torn. I did buy the repair kit to glue in new membranes but I never got around installing them. I was occasionally looking around on the web for speakers that were better, 8 Ohms rated and the installation had to be plug and play. Well, I'm happy to announce that I found that setup and it works amazingly good.
Amazon to the rescue:
Speakers:
DS18 MB69 350W 8 Ohm for $33.68 a pair, shipped! Yes, $33.68 a PAIR! Amazingly they look like much better quality that the stock ones and sound great.
Speaker housing:
Metra 82-8146 that fit perfectly on the door to house your new speakers, $13.95 a PAIR, shipped:
Metra 72-8104 speaker connectors:
These allow you to just plug in the speaker connectors to these connectors and connect to the vehicle original speaker harness with no splicing. $5.29 a PAIR, shipped.
Door panel retainer clips:
For those broken or missing retainers. $8.49 for 15 pieces, shipped.
Total cost $61.49! Compare that to about $300 for a set of new speakers at the dealer and you will most likely do what I did!
The results were truly astonishing. I followed the panel removal instructions from other posts found here in the club and it was very easy to remove them. The speaker installation was plug and play and they sound amazing. One thing that you will need to do is expand the speaker side Metra connectors (red in color) with a pick so the speaker side + and - connectors slide in. They were too tight to fit but it took 10 seconds to expand them with a pick and they slid right in.
Another thing you will notice is that the new speaker wiring connectors must be inserted on the side of the speaker housing opening due to the speaker + and - connectors being on the side of the speaker. I had to bend the speaker + and - connector contacts to give length to the speaker connector wiring adaptor so it was not stretched. Also, I've re-used the original speaker mounting bolts but they will not tighten very tight so I would recommend going to the hardware store to get ones that are a bit thicker. I didn't but I plan on doing it eventually.
I really like the way the ML system sounds now. Crisp, clean bass and no distortion!

Jim

My factory sub is next, now I can tell it is definitely blown because I can finally raise the volume. I haven't spend much time looking into options for that yet. I don't think the rest of the speakers are bad.

The stock ML system is 240 watts max through 14 speakers, so the 350 watt max speakers will be fine (they can handle more power than the amp can put out). I don't see any advantage to the 450w speakers unless you plan on replacing the stock ML amp with aftermarket sometime in the future.

The ML amp is designed to run 8 ohm speakers. Running a lower resistance means it could overheat, and will likely just sound worse. It will play louder, though..
Dash: 1 speaker
Front doors: 3 speakers each
Rear doors: 1 speaker each
Cargo area: 1 speaker
Cargo door: 2 speakers
12 total.

The 2006 GX brochure said the ML has 14 but I only count 12 as well......I wonder if the rear doors are coaxial? Maybe they meant 14 channel?

If any of them are coaxial, those would be the ones I would think would be.
From what I can tell, the 12 get individual channels in the amp. If the back doors are coaxials, they probably just use a bass-blocker capacitor as a crossover.

Are these actually better than the stock mark levinsons, in terms of volume or bass response? Or, just a good replacement if your mark levinson's are blown. I just want an upgrade.

I snagged a couple pair on eBay for under $50. That one at $300 is probably the same one I saw at $300 when I was looking, and I hope it never sells. That is a ridiculous markup.

I’m showing these (AC Delco 25993220 for Chevy Cobalt ‘05-‘10 and Pontiac G-5 ‘07-‘09) for $14.97 + shipping -
On eBay for $26.88 w/ free ground shipping - https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-6x9-Che...-/162003224357
The Lanza OPTI69HPRO8 is sold out everywhere. After seeing the replacement costs for subwoofers I decided to start with a 6” Foam Repair Kit from Simply Speakers - https://www.simplyspeakers.com/Toyot...fg_99-0-1.html - If that works I might try to do the same with they 6” x 9”..... And others if they are bad off.
