Default power steering issue

I own a 2007 GX470. It has suddenly developed a loud whine. We replaced the power steering fluid (which we were told was filthy) but the whine is still there. The mechanic has suggested we drive it for about 500 miles to see if the noise disappears. Do you agree with his suggestion? I'm not crazy about driving it with the loud noise but don't mind if this helps. He says the car is safe to drive.

Your suggestions/help will be greatly appreciated. Also said the cost of replacing the pump would run about $900.

Be sure it is the PS pump, not an idler pulley, WP bearing, etc. If it is the PS pump and it doesn't get quieter try some PS Conditioner. Start looking for a pump.

Did your mechanic bleed the system after replacing the fluid? If there is still air in there, it may still make the noise. Should be safe to drive though. Also check to make sure the return hose to the pump is not cracked or split and leaking/sucking air. Check the other hoses and fittings for leaks as well. The positive displacement power steering pumps have very few parts to wear out besides seals and bearings. A rebuild kit from Rockauto is $14, but you will probably need a pulley puller.
