Smile Plastidip Anthracite Grey Rims on Blizzard Pearl

After reading other threads on ways to repair my pealing OEM Lexus rims, I went ahead and attempted the process with the Anthracite Grey. I wanted a color that I would call "Titanium" and I believe this color did a pretty good job. These pics were taken as the sun was setting and it was darker out. I sprayed about 7 coats of Anthracite Grey per wheel and used 2 coats of Glossifier. I ordered a kit from Plastidip that came with 4 cans of Anthracote Grey and 1 can of Glossifer. $56.50 shipped.

On a side note... the Anthracite Grey matches the interior trim of the top of the cup holder very well. TIP - do not try to clean painted interior trim pieces with Goop Off

FYI: I just purchased this 2006 GX470 a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I was driving in a 2001 RX300 Silver Sport previously. So far I have added the Xenondepot HID Extreme lights with Philips 4300 bulbs. Tinted the side windows and ordered a Rear Spoiler, which is being installed in 2 days. I still want to add Bluetooth audio steaming, LED or Sport tail lights and look for larger 20" or 22" rims (can't find any I like).

I hope these pics help someone. I had a hard time finding a Blizzard White GX470 with Anthracite Grey Plasidipped rims.

Looks great. But what will happen when the tires need to be balanced?

Were the tire balancing weights removed? It is hard to tell from the photo

Looks great. The plastidip weighs nothing, it won't effect the balancing.

No the weights were not removed. Funny you asked that. The plastidip peeled a little around the weights.

I'm new to plastidip. This is my first experience.I guess it gets more durable after 2 weeks, but I don't think it could withstand a tire balance machine. I think mounting and attaching new weights would tear various places around the rim edge. There is a fix it kit - https://www.dipyourcar.com/Fix-Kit-A...n-YouTube.html

It's more work and maintenance than powder coating. But it's kinda fun and much cheaper. I didn't plan on the rims looking so good. My rims are trashed. This was an attempt to see how I like having dark colored rims. Also to buy me some time while I find someone reasonable that can powder coat them. I went to a very reputable company that specializes in reconditioning OEM rims and they told me that they cannot repair all of the pitting or bubbling because it's a chemical reaction that has altered the physical composition of the rim. But they will give it their best shot for around $250 per rim. I can buy reconditioned ones for that.

$225 from this place - http://www.originalwheels.com/lexus-...702006rims.php
and $219 from here - http://www.hubcaphaven.com/gx470_wheels.htm

I don't plan on getting the tires balanced until they need to be replaced in 2-3 years. I plan on buying new larger rims, once I can find some that I like and these will be winter rims. Once these are my 2nd set, I will probably paint them myself with something more permanent.

Plastidip will eventually rip off with wheel cleaning, car washes, and rock chips, etc. I've had good results with Duplicolor wheel paint in a spray can with the right amount of prep, even through offroading it held up well.

Plastidip works great, goes on easy- a million colors to choose from. Beware the car wash! Mine came off after the first trip through the auto car wash. I eventually just had them powdercoated.

Looks great! Ironically, I am planning on dipping my 07 ash blue with anthracite matte finish.I hope to do it on Monday. Did you dip it with the wheels on the vehicle? If so, what do you do about the lugs and emblem?

Did you remove the emblems when you dipped the center caps? Looks good for the price

Sorry for the delay, I just saw these comments. I left the wheels on the truck while I dipped them. I placed bags over the rotors and brake components. I taped the chrome lug nuts. I removed the center caps off the truck and left the emblems on and dipped them separately. I then pealed the dip off each chrome emblem. It worked very well.
