under the passenger seat and I just read after doing a search that you simply pop out the old and insert the new one. I hope that's accurate

Yes, slide the passenger seat all the way forward, look in the back and you'll see the disc reader. Flip down the protective door, slide the cover open, and press the eject button that is revealed.

A new disc will get you updated road info. You won't get a new UI or new features or anything.

You can buy it from your local dealer, or the site I linked in post #4 above.

I'm sure someone will jump in and mention the ability to torrent it off the internet, but there are legal and ethical implications of doing that. Plus the chance of downloading a virus. While I'd certainly prefer the disc to be cheaper, or to be available via subscription, the price isn't stupid expensive.

Note to Lexus: Ford updates maps in the MyFord Touch system when you make a service visit -- for free. If a mainstream brand can do this, surely a luxury brand can?

I agree - DVD for data just doesn't work these days -- it doesn't hold enough, it's never current, and the fact that it has moving parts means it's prone to breaking.

Ford (and other makers) use SD cards, and I think that's a good solution - no moving parts, small, relatively cheap, fast & easy to update. But I'm stuck with what came with the car.

Which is your other point - I assume you meant always online maps over a cellular data connection? This works great in areas with good coverage, but in places like west Texas it'd be a problem. Perhaps if there were over-the-air updates, with the data cached locally, that'd be a pretty good solution. You'd be as current as the last time you came into range of a LTE tower.

Lexus is already using an SD card in the current IS, and I would assume that they will be switching to the use of SD cards in other future models. All other current Lexus models are using hard drive navigation systems.

Lexus started to use the hard drive navigation systems with the LS as early as 2007, and I don't believe that they have used a DVD-based system in any vehicles since 2009. I also note that Lexus is charging the same $169 for navigation system updates regardless of whether it is a DVD or hard drive system, and, for IS updates with the SD card system, they are charging $210.

When you consider that our GX vehicles are now between about 6 and 12 years old, I would not expect them to be using 2014 technology.

The V14.1 navigation updates are out, and they're on sale.

$99 for non-SD card updates (a DVD disc for the GX470) through December. Afterwards the price goes back to $169 (regular price).
