I need to lube the front axle shaft bushings. Has anyone had tis done at the dealer and what is the cost to expect. Or do you do it yourself. It looks more complicated than a differential change or engine oil change. Some special tools etc. Thanks, al

Front axle gets greased about every. 10,000 miles and rear every 5000, I believe. One fitting on each shaft, two on each u joint. By doing so with royal purple synthetic grease I have eliminated the notorious driveline clunk.

Are we talking about repacking the front wheel bearings? Repacking the front bearings is a regular maintenance item for LX's, but I don't see any repack interval for the GX.

I have attached the page from the 2006 GX,LX,RX Owner’s manual supplement. The scan is just one page which shows the bushing lube (second one down). The Lexus dealer in Bellevue said it was $550 and it was basically 4+ hours of labor.

There are a number of forums which show how to DIY. It is a little more than I want to take on.

So has anyone had the dealer or an independent do this work? What cost did you have to pay?
Anyone do this in the Seattle area.

O.K. I understand what you're talking about now. Found a thread on the subject. Looks like a PITA to do.
(Tool talked about in the thread will not work on a GX we use 39mm nuts).

I looked into this a bit further and in the repair manual, it doesn't really say ANYTHING about how to do this!

It mentions it very briefly in the Chassis maintenance schedule, and all that it says is to refer to the pages which detail the removal/replacement of the front CV shafts, and the wheel bearings. Those sections themselves don't say a word about regreasing anything.

I almost have my doubts about this being required with the GXs....

Its almost as if the LX information trickled by accident into the GX manual, because the front axle designs are VERY different, i mean, how are you supposed to repack these bearings? They are non servicable and the actual axle that the wheel bolts to is pressed into them, and I can't find anything in the part diagrams that shows any sort of a "bushing" that needs greasing....

It wouldn't be the first time misprints have happened. All my Toyota manuals have little typos and such in them.

One example I remember is the manual for my 87' Cressida, in which the diagram for the connector to the climate control module was COMPLETELY different than the one that was actually on the car

I was rather annoyed when i had a problem with that once and the diagnostic procedures were totally wrong!

Thanks for the info. It is funny the Lexus dealer on the east side quoted $550 for the service and four hours. I will have to follow up next week with them. Traveling now.

After significant run around I believe that the bearings are sealed and need no maintenance. It looks like the Lexus manual is in error. Never did get to the bottom of why the one Lexus dealer quoted $550 to lube, perhaps it was to replace the bearings. End of saga - no maintenance
