Just replaced the rear shocks with 4runner shocks as described in this post. Shocks were only $31 each and with shipping the total was <$80! The ride wasn't that bad before but occasionally I would hit the bump stops on speed bumps. So far it seems like this did the trick-that hasn't happened since. It rides probably on the stiffer/ "sport" side of the adjustable suspension now, which is fine with me.

One tip-don't even bother trying to get the bolt off from the top. Just cut it off. Also, make sure you are feeling patient when you do this...mine were rusted and took quite a bit of prying even after I chopped off the nut. Otherwise it was all very straightforward. Also I couldn't get some of the old washer off of the old shocks, so I bought a couple stainless washers and just used those instead. They aren't rounded to hold the bushing nicely but I don't see why it should make much difference so I just went for the easy solution.
