A lexus dealer will give you Diag of what the problem is and will only charge you about 100-150 to do it! He will look check it out and advise then its up to you what to do! Your "Mech" just wants a large sum of money before Christmas sounds like to me--especially when he says "EVERYTHING" must be replaced are you F**** kidding me, who says that anymore, surely not a Real Mech.
Advice" Take to LEXUS dealer and get a estimate and pay the SMALL diag fee--that will also go towards the fix too.

This thread has gotten stale. The OP should just do what he wants and stop wasting time. I am glad to help anyone but come on one liners and answers that leave more questions are a waste of our collective time .

No details was provided by the mechanic. All that was said was everything needed to be replaced. If he told me the thermostat or valves, I would not need to open a thread to find the root cause.
I was told my heat does not work, everything needs to be replaced. No details, just a price. My opinion, the guy was a scam. I am looking here for guidance what the issues could be and how to test it.

My advice....take your GX to Lexus or Toyota and have them look at it and either have them repair it or once you get the written estimate repair it yourself.
Good luck.

For those who are stil interested in the facts and not interested in "speculations" of unnamed mechanics and what should have, could have been done; I checked my upper and lower radiator hoses. I found the top one was hot, the lower one, near the engine is hot, but towards the raditaor it is cold. I am assuming the heat for the lower hose maybe attributed to the proximity of the engine.
So I am assuming that this may be the thermostate. My question though is, does my heat have to be on for the lower hose to be hot? or it will be hot no matter if it is on or off.

Issue resolved
I watched a Youtube video that shows how to flush the heater coil,
,
i followed the directions, except I did not use a compressor, but a garden hose and I did not add CLR since I did not want to take the chance of corroding the heater coil.
End result....I now have heat!!
