Default Question about Transmission fluid?

Hi Guys,

I'm taking my truck for my inspection Saturday. We just replaced the front brakes, oil changed (I use synthetic oil and change it every 5000 miles) tires rotated and a new 72 month battery. I bought the truck new in 06. It has 50,000 miles on it. I was told by Lexus that all my fluids were replaced at 25,000 miles when they had it in to replace the alternator and I questioned them about this and was assured it was done yet my paper work states 30,000 mile maintenance so I'm not quite sure since two different dealerships tell me two different things as to what is done at 30,000 miles.

Should I have the transmission fluid changed?
Should I replace the belt?
Do I need to replace my brake fluid?

What else would you recommend? As you can see I don't put a lot of mileage on the truck.

Thanks so much for your input.

Trans oil is synthetic, unless you are trailering, should be good for 100,000 miles. Serpentine belt or timing belt? Serpentine belt I did at 120,000 miles, still looked good. Timing belt,Toyota recommends every 90,000. Check your glove box literature. Synthetic oil changes at 5000 miles, overkill, I use Amsoils signature series, 15,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

Your truck uses Toyota WS ATF transmission fluid, which is good for a long time. At least 200,000 miles or so

Timing Belt needs to be replaced at around 90,000

If brake fluid is good, no need to replace it just for the sake of it. If it is dirty, it needs to be replaced regardless of the mileage

Replacing synthetic fluid every 5,000 is a waste. Your engine oil is good for 10,000 or up to a year.

Check your owner's manual, it has detailed specifications for items to be changed at each scheduled maintenance.

Thanks guys,

Does anyone have an idea of the cost to have the wheel bearings repacked?

Also as for the belt would you take into consideration age? By the time I get to 90,000 miles the truck may be 10 yrs old.

The reason I'm asking these questions is the dealer is telling me that all this needs to be done and my book it telling me something else. I trust this site so I will go with what you have advised.

Timing Belt = go by the mileage. It probalby will be perfect after 90k too, it is just a good idea to replace it.

What's wrong with your wheel bearings? Why would they need to be repacked?

Well I typed a long response and it disappeared.

Nothing wrong with the bearings it states in the book to do this at this mileage interval.

Sorry for all the questions. We started doing our own maintenance when the truck came back from the dealership with more problems then when it went in. Missing clips from the engine cover, dirty interior, chipped rims and so on. We have never owned a foreign truck prior to this. All our trucks have been American made and the last two prior to this were 03 Escalade and 05 Escalade both junk. So doing the maintenance is a bit of a learning curve and I am grateful for the information that is given on this site to me.

My husband has replaced both front and back brakes, air filters, oil changes and new tires. Tire are also rotated every 6000 miles. We take very good care of the truck and this is the first time we have kept a truck this long. I love the truck and would like to keep it longer so I want to make sure that all is done when it is suppose to be to keep it running perfect.

The only problems I have had with the truck were:

Pitting rims (which were replaced by dealership with no cost to me). Replaced not refinished and that was a fight.

Alternator that went at 25,000 miles and left us high and dry while on vacation. So Lexus said that they did the 30,000 mile maintenance for free which they said included replacing all fluids. Long story.

Lexus Link and they had to replace the whole unit (glad I had the extended warranty)

The "clunk" which was replaced at around 5,000 miles (no problems since)

Thanks for taking the time to help me out and answering my questions.
