Was considering throwing some snow tires on them and using them in the winter.

I'm not a fan of the larger wheels on this truck but those rims look awesome.
Used a wire brush on a drill, a couple actually...when i had all the oxidation basically ground off I used a palm sander to finish it up then 1000 grit by hand at the end to make it nice and smooth. Then a solvent clean and etching primer, filler primer X 2, then auto paint, then 2 coats of epoxy style clear coat. a bunch steps (9 in total) and I'd say I spend ~ 1 1/4 hours per rim.

So you actually didn't take the chrome plating off so its possible that it still starts to chip over time??

The standard GX470 wheels are painted and clear coated not chromed. You can sand out most of the imperfections and scuff up the rest of the wheels and repaint them. Chrisfix has a few good tutorials on youtube.

gotcha
So its the clear coat that's peeling on mine and others then not actual chrome plating?
not to hate on chrisfix or anything...has some really solid videos
but i would hate to compare what he does on Fords to what Lexus/Toyota spent money on
Anyone else care to chime in on what the actual finish or material is on our factory chrome wheels?

just found this but still would love a 2nd opinion on what the finish is only because this guy said he didn't have the factory chrome

Yes it's the clear coat along with some paint. Its happening on my factory wheels as well. I have aftermarket rims on my truck but when the weather gets a little warmer I'm going to sand down the original wheels, smooth them out then prime, base coat and clear coat. Chrisfix's videos on refinishing wheels is a great tutorial, the only thing is that he uses cheap paints and clear coats. After you sand I suggest that you use some self etching primer to fill in any defects https://repaintsupply.com/sem-39683-...sol-p1461.html, then use a quality base coast. I certainly would not use the clear coat he's using. Instead I'd use an epoxy 2k clear coat
Amazon Amazon
. Just be very careful with that clear coat. It's lethal. You need a full gas mask when spraying that stuff.

Finally got around to dealing with my '03 GX and its pervasive wheel cancer. A decade of New England winters really took a toll. Rather than try to get them restored or just grab another set of GX rims, I went in a completely different direction. I bought a set of OEM tires/rims from a 2018 4Runner of a guy on CL. I'm definitely willing to overlook the Toyota logo vs. Lexus logo on a truck with 200k miles. So far, so good...

(I also need to create a thread to document the front end damage that this GX suffered last winter and the steps I took to repair it.)
