Funny you should ask, I just changed the filter out on mine yesterday.

The filter is under the trim piece on the left side of the engine bay if you were facing it.

Remove the pop clips by reaching under the trim piece and pushing up from the bottom.

Then remove the screws on the firewall

the trim piece comes right off to expose the airbox.

pop the four clips on the air box and your in.

On a similar note. Does anyone know if there is an after market life-time reusable air filter for this car? I checked K&N and couldn't find one for the GX.

Thanks shodog for the instructions and the pix!

I miss the days when I could unscrew one wingnut, pull off the cover, and replace the air filter for $5. I don't miss the annoying carburators that always stalled, though

Ditto, shodog. The pix are priceless. Thanks for dumming it down for me.

BTW, does anyone know of particularly good deals on these engine filters, or should I just drop by Auto Zone?

I'm thinking about buying a K&N air filter off of ebay. the total price shipped is 41.81. Advance auto parts has them for 53.99 before tax. Autozone has them for 48.99 before tax. I got these prices online so they could be cheaper at the store, you might want to call your local shop and see. The part number is 33-2144.

I haven't bought mine yet but i will in a day or two. I'm going to call autozone and autoparts to see if the price is cheaper than their online prices and if they're cheaper then i can just get one instead of waiting for the one from ebay. Hope this info helps.

I got the TRD filter instead of the K&N. The TRD filter is better built for about the same price as K&N.

I got the TRD filter from sewell when they had that free shipping promotion, it is $64 right now, I think you get a discount if you punch in the code from this site.

You have a part number for the k&n filter? I already have one for my ES300 and have the oil and cleaning spray so one less thing I need to buy so I'll stick with the K&N. I went directly to their website and couldn't find the item for the 03 GX470.

Thanks! I sent an email to K&N but didn't get a response.

I also asked them if they would make a reusable hepa cabin filter. I'd go for that!

i just got done installing the new filter. I don't know if it is because my oem filter is just plain filthy (it was very dirty and had bugs in it) but the new k&n filter felt like the suv was breathing better than normal. I took pictures but i haven't uploaded them and plus i don't have any photography skills so the pictures do suck.
