Default How to upgrade Mark Levinson / Nav. system ?

Is there any way to upgrade the sound when you have the Mark Levinson head unit and navigation system ? My old 4 - runner had a great after - market system but my sound tech says the Lexus stock system is permanent and can not be upgraded or replaced with a higher end head unit . I bet someone as fanatic as I am about killer sound has done something to get his/her Lex gx to rock .
Thanks and Happy New Year !

Default Head units are not usually the problem and generally have fairly decent electronics

However, the amp(s) and speakersiare generally where the biggest improvements can be made. While there are no doubt "better" head units, I'd be surprised if anyone could or would hear the difference. Even of there was a miniscule difference, the cost/aggravation of swaping a NAV integrated head unit would be prohibitive and, unless reversible, would destroy your resale value.

Default Sound System Swap

As a professional Audio installer, I can assure you that the integrated systems in todays vehicles are getting more difficult to switch, modify or even replace defective parts without the dealer getting involved. However, given enough time and, as mentioned above, enough money, anything can be done.
The system I would lay out for your vehicle would start with the Pioneer D1 navigation/media center, as the double din size would be an easier fit than some mounting kit.
For space considerations, I would use a Memphis Belle 5 Channel amplifier and retain the stock subwoofer, as it probably would sound ok, but all the other speakers would have to be changed. Speaker choices would be a personal preferance, but I recommend Memphis or MB Quart component sets. A rough estimate for this type of install would be around $4k-$4.5k and would require about 4-5 days to complete. Of course if your ever in Colorado, PM and II'll be happy to show you around and talk some more about your GX as I'm considering one to purchase.
