I've made the decision to switch over from an STI to a pearl white 2007 GX470 (complete 180 ). I ended up researching through quite a few GX's before picking up this one, but noticed there were a few things that I needed to take care of. I am not afraid of reading! If some of my questions have been answered elsewhere, please link the thread and I'll read all about it .
1) I noticed that the roof has some of its paint peeling (probably a 1' x 2' square, and other random chips here and there). While I don't want to invest a lot into the car, I don't want it to rust either. Seeing as the big chip seems to have made it to the metal itself, whats the best way about fixing it without spending an arm and a leg.
2) I noticed that the Mark Levinson speaker (in the trunk, passenger side) seems to have blown. I've heard that the ML speakers are a pain to work on, but is there any advice here? Even with negative bass, it still rattles.
3) I noticed the CV boot had a tear in it and was leaking out grease. How serious of an issue is this? Should I be looking to replace this ASAP, or can it be put off? Also, can I purchase a duralast CV axle kit from somewhere like advanced auto, or should i go with something else?
The white paint on the GX's has been covered at length elsewhere on this site. If you want to keep it inexpensive check out Youtube for spray bomb paint repair. Do it to control the rust, besides no one looks at your roof anyway.
Fix your CV boot asap otherwise you will be buying a new CV joint or the entire shaft after the dirt and water finish it off. The OEM hard plastic boots last the longest but require disassembly of the velocity joint to install. There is also a split boot option that is handy. It comes with a glue to join the seam. Pack the velocity joint with fresh CV rated grease. While you are under the car grease the front a rear drive shafts!
The ML OEM sub speaker is likely not completely blown. The ML speakers have a notorious rubber surround that fails. For mine I got the Springfield Speaker Repair replacement kit (around $20) that included surrounds for the sub, both front door speakers, glue and instructions. A saturday project, getting the speaker removed took the most time. Now it works and sounds great again. The kit is on ebay, just search "Flat-Attach 6" x 9" Speaker Foam Surround Repair Kit - 6x9 - 2F69-01
Thank you for the reply! I'll look into both the paint and the speaker repair kit! As for the joint, any advice on knowing when I should bite the bullet and buy a new assembly for the CV? The boot seems to be torn. Very slightly, but torn enough that I have grease everywhere.
Look for a touch-up kit, like automotivetouchup.com
without oil in the CV joint the joint will destroy itself. A good ship can rebuild the oem unit. I use Cardone shafts only because other online posts suggested no issues with Cardone item. I got mine from RA.
Get a new Kicker speaker to replace the old one. Check Crutchfield. The ML audio uses 7-9ohm speakers, so if you get a 4ohm just add a 2ohm power resistor, this is ok because the newer speakers usually have higher sensitivity.

Probably don't need a new CV yet, but that one needs attention sooner than later.
