How's your paint?

How's everybody's paint doing. I have a new, garage kept 2003 GX470 with about 1500 miles on it.
Here's the thing. I already have 2 paint chips on the hood (small, but down to the metal), and a small paint bubble on the drivers side rear quarter panel. It may just be happenstance, but I've never had this many paint problems so quick with any car I can think of. Any ideas??

Thanks,
-Russ

Last five vehicals i have had 3M rock guard put on and it ends the hood fenders and mirror chips.:D :D

My paint is great, with the exception of the back bumper, but hey that was my fault. I have no chips, but that is defintely because of 3M stoneguard

Thanks for the input. It looks like Rock guard is the way I need to go (once I get all these dings fixed)

are there any nationwide vendors for the 3M product?

ktiger Aug 27, 2003 10:55 AM

Yes, check out these websites. They are all the same product with a different name. I personally have xpel installed on my LX470 and it works wonderfully. I had purchased a bra (never installed it) but returned it to the Lexus dealer after I found out about the 3m product. Cost me $361.00 installed. Didn't have a stoneguard dealer locally and the digishield dealer wanted $460.00 but was also a 1 1/2 hours drive. Would have went with the stoneguard because of the wrap around features but the xpel is pretty good.

Find someone locally and by pass the dealer, just had my new GX done last week $170 including the mirriors. Had my other GX done and four others done over the last few years. Dealer and the large companies charge and arm and leg when it is the same material used 3 M, made rite here in MN. Anyone locally want a name and # please contact me privatly. Paying 2-6 hundred dollars for this is a big ripoff IMHO. The garentee is the same no matter how much you pay lol.:D :) :p  :dance2: :bigok:

Thanks for all of the good info. I have an appointment at the dealer this afternoon to look at my paint damage. We'll see how that works out. Anyway, I need to have the damaged areas repaired before I can proceed with a Stoneguard or like product. The prices you guys are quoting are lower than I expected. I'll let you know what the prices are looking like in the metro DC area when I finish researching them.

Thanks all

So how did you notice these paint problems, did you wash it and notice them cause I just waxed both my 4Runner and ES300 and both could use a new paint job, and these are 2 Toyotas with 5k and 7k on them.

This paint is no ways near chip resistant:(

In a nut shell, that's it. We've had a pretty wet summer in this area and a few weeks ago we finally had a nice day. Thought I would detail the GX, got outside and found 2 rock chips and some other material (looks like some type of overspray) that's eating the paint on 1 rear quarter panel and the tailgate and rear bumper of the truck. The good news is the service manager at the local dealer has set an appt to have his body shop fix everything at no cost. Maybe the Lexus customer service is still alive and well.
Want to get it fixed so that I can have the 3M material installed.

Glad to hear lexus is fixing it so you can get 3M installed, 1 thing I would look into is not only installing it on your front end but on the rear where the tires throw up all the dirt and water when it rains, the mud/slash guards don't do the best job at stopping everything, I have a few nicks in the paint down their hard to notice but I did.
