Technically not a recall, but an enhanced warranty on this item.
(Recalls have the NHTSA forcing you to perform them, this was entirely Lexus wanting to make their customers happy)
I recently learned of the GX 470 cracked dash issue after mine started to crack. There was a program that was offered several years ago to replace it for free. I went to my local Lexus dealer and they said they could not do anything now that the program was over, they suggested calling Lexus corporate. I did and they said they could Also not do now that the program is over. As they put it, they “decline” to do the repair. They said they mailed me something 2 times, which I never got. Confirmed the addresss.
So the only fix is replace it or repair it. Has anyone repaired it successfully? I have 3 smallish cracks so it is not horrible but my concern is if it cracks more so it would turn into an endless repair job.
Obviously make sure you've got the right year & trim level (given your VIN, your dealer can look it up) before ordering.
Speaking of ordering - the dash assembly is a large delicate part. It's over-size for UPS which means it will have to come by motor-freight. And there's a good chance of it being damaged in shipment. If you get quotes from an online seller, be sure to include the shipping in your cost. If you buy from your local dealer, shipping is free.
There may be instructions in TIS for swapping it. All I'm going to say is that it'll be very labor intensive, as the whole dash has to come apart (including dropping the steering wheel)
Coverlay product is GREAT! Worth every penny.
Perfect fit.
I actually put the cover in with no glue just to see how it fits...it fit so well, I just left it and have never glued it in. Looks factory.
The one oddity is there is a cut out for the passenger airbag that is not in the original dash, but it's not an issue, just different. So, don't let the air bag cover throw you, just put it in.
I have some cracking near the glovebox, but it's not very bad yet. Is there anything I can do to prevent it from cracking further?
What color is your dash? If you're out of any type of warranty work and don't want to buy a new dash, you can try to do a repair with Sugru. Look it up on Amazon. It's a colored silicone molding putty and it comes in small foil pouches. It works with black interiors pretty well. I'll attach a pic of radio button caps I replaced. Someone decided to remove them at some point, so I just molded a new cap right on the button. If you work with a rubber glove on your hand and warm soapy water, you may be able to feather it into the crack where it wouldn't be noticeable. If you have never worked with silicone caulk before, practice a little bit before applying to your dash. The glove is not 100% necessary, but it will keep your skin and nails from getting stained. Take a drop or two of dish soap and add it to a cup of warm water. Put the Sugru in place on the dash and mold it with your gloved fingers, dipping your fingers in the water first before pressing it into the cracks. The warm soapy water helps flatten and smooth the silicone. If you skip this step, it tends to dry lumpy. Once it's exposed to the air out of the packet it begins to dry so you have to work quickly. Lots of trial and error on this and I learned the soapy water trick from a friend. If you need a pattern embossed into the Sugru, that is possible too, but I won't bog you down with the details because most likely your cracks are thin. Any questions, just ask! It's a lot easier than it sounds!
