Here loflin, this was discussed here:

I know, that's why I said "theory" more like urban legends.
Maybe I should call the "Myth Busters" guys to work this experiment.

Hmm, read thru the whole post, twice, didn't see anything about cooling internals??

Lot's of talk about running too low and sloshing gas around resulting in fuel pump sucking no gas and hurting it or the fuel injectors.

I don't buy any of it, except in an extreme worse case.

I had a SC430 for 4 years, ran it PAST 0 (by 20-30 miles, sometimes more ) EVERY time. No problems. And I have to go straight up and down a very steep hill to get to my neighborhood.

Why did I do that, I just don't like pumping gas any more often than I have too...

Actually it was the "injectors" and "fuel pumps" that they were talking about, like what you mentioned above.

Several other vehicles have the fuel pump in the fuel tank level sensor float, and if the tank gets empty, the pump continues to run and eventually overheats and burns out. Then you need to get a new fuel pump/level sensor...

Man I almost did it today. First let me say I really like this truck but Lexus has a long way to go to catch up with Detroit when it comes to the little driver comfort things. The latest happened today. I noticed last night as I pulled into my garage that the fuel light was on and the gauge showed "E". You know today was another day and I forgot about the light and "E"' Drove around the island, stopped by my boat and went to lunch. Then I noticed it again (the light and the "E"). Grabbed the first station I came to. Just made it.

What's my point?

Both my GM vehicles not only have an "e" and a light but they also chime and a warning is displayed on the nav screen. It's the little things like those where Lexus has missed the boat.

Rant Over

Hmmm, each to his own, hard to believe your "ranting" over it not beating you senseless with an idiot light. Personally, I do not like the light at all, on any of my cars. I know how to read a fuel gauge (have been doing it for years ). I really would like a way to easily turn off the light.

Default Low Fuel Can Cause Issues - Though

When it's cold out, having low fuel in the tank will leave lots of room for condensation. This condensation is subject to freezing in the fuel lines and can cause issues.

That's why they created dry gas. I'm not certain if the issue is as critical as it used to be (i.e., Lexus may have some sort of water separator), but I mainly try to keep the tank above 1/4 during the winter months as a precaution.

For the record, it makes no sense this "Cooling the Internals" theory.

We got down to 30 miles left the other day, and never saw the "E" light... It's surprising; in our BMWs, the "E" light comes on with 60 miles left, pretty much without fail... plenty of time to find fuel... Waiting till I have one gallon left in a car that gets 17-18 MPG seems a little short-sighted IMO...

When my tank gets low, the little gas station pump sign lights up. However, on start up there is another light which I never see which shows a triangle with an exclamation point over some sort of liquid. Is this the light you are referring to?

Default Hey Guys

I was following this thread and Did an OFFICIAL PERSONAL TEST.
By the way.. normally i fill up my car i drive till i see the Fuel LIte flash for the first time... which in my case is always between 300-310 miles.

But day before i drove the car even after the yellow light came on... When light comes on permanent (range reads zero) i drove the car exactly 55 miles before the car stopped completely. I called lexus road side assistance which gave me FREE 7 litres of gas... was nice of them... so i'm assuming every car would be different just like its different on milage (result of driving style place of driving etc etc)... I drive in City of toronto.. and that was my personal experience... with that said.. i'm sure that this car can only go from prolly 40-65 miles on YELLOW light.

I also called my service advisor and told him that i ran out of gas on hwy and if there's anything i should worry about. his answer was unlike diesel cars petrol ones don't really need any service if it only happens once a while... if it happens on more occasions he would advice to get injector clean up service.
Car drives normal and i will make sure it never happens ...

Hope that helps.
